Memphis, Tenn. – The RV Washington University in St. Louis baseball team fell to Rhodes 5-4 on Thursday in the final game of the Bears spring break trip to Memphis. The Bears are now 11-3 on the season.
Rhodes scored its first run in the bottom of the second inning, starting with a Corbin Kinder lead-off single. Gunnar Vachris reached first on an error, putting Kinder in scoring position. With two outs, Peter York singled, driving in Kinder.
The Lynx scored again in the bottom of the third inning to go up 2-0. John McNair singled and advanced to second on a passed ball. Ben Burkhart singled to put runners on the corners and McNair scored on a Ben Wilson sac fly to center.
The Bears tied things up in the top of the sixth inning.
Clayton Miller led off with a single and moved up on a
Braden Mazone single. Both runners advanced a base on a
Broghan O'Connor sac bunt and Miller scored on a
Shane Pellegrino ground out. Mazone went on to score on a wild pitch.
Rhodes put up three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 5-2 lead. With one out, York doubled and Quinn Blackman was hit by a pitch. McNair singled to load the bases and prompt a WashU pitching change. Burkhart doubles, driving in both York and Blackman. McNair went on to score on a wild pitch for the three-run lead.
WashU rallied for two more runs in the top of the eighth inning. Mazone singled and moved up to third on an O'Connor double. Pellegrino's single drove in both Miller and O'Connor to make it a 5-4 game which held until the final out.
Mazone went 2-for-4 with one run scored while Pellegrino finished 2-for-4 with three RBI. Jacinto finished 2-for-5 with one run scores and Miller went 1-for-3 with one run and two walks.
Joseph Hettinger took the loss on the mound, pitching 2.1 innings, allowing three earned runs.
The Bears return home on Sunday for a double-header against Gustavus Adolphus.
