Memphis, Tenn. – The Washington University in St. Louis baseball team notched its 10
th win of the season with a 15-6 victory over Westfield State on Tuesday.
Westfield State got on the board first, putting up a run in the bottom of the first inning. Alex Martin drew a lead-off walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch and to third on a balk. He went on to score on a balk to make it a 1-0 game.
The Bears responded with four runs in the top of the second inning, starting with a lead-off homer from
Clayton Miller to tie the game.
Kaden Bernhard reached base on a fielder's choice and advanced on a
Hunter Goldberg single through the right side.
Zac Malis singled to right second, scoring Bernhard.
With two outs, Malis advanced to second on a throwing error and Goldberg scored for a 3-1 game.
Chris Jacinto doubled to left center, scoring Malis
Westfield State's Kyle Darby led off the bottom of the second with a homer to left, making it a 4-2 game.
In the top of the third,
Braden Mazone continued the trend of lead-off homers, drilled one over the right center fence to give WashU a 5-2 edge.
The Owls put up another run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Darby reached base on a throwing error and advanced to second on a Justin Neidel ground out. Robinson Guerrero Baez singled to short and Darby scored on a throwing error.
The Bears added another run in the top of the fifth inning. Mazone led off with a single through the right side and moved up on a Miller single to left. Both runners advanced a base on a
Broghan O'Connor sac bunt and Bernhard drew a walk to load the bases. Goldberg was hit by a pitch, scoring Mazone.
WashU had a three-run outing in the top of the sixth. Jacinto drew a lead-off walk and Mazone followed with a single to center. Miller produced the third Bears' homer of the day with a shot to left field, making it a 9-3 game.
In the top of the seventh inning, Malis hit a lead-off single to center and Jacinto drilled WashU's fourth homer of the day to left for an 11-3 Bears' advantage.
Westfield State scored three more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Neidel led off with a single to right and advanced to second on a throwing error. Baez drove in Neidel with a single to center. Martin hit a one-out single through the right side and Devin Slattery singled to third to load the bases for the Owls. Nick Marshall drew a walk, scoring Baez and prompting a WashU pitching change. Then, D Burnett hit a sac fly to center, scoring Martin and cutting the Bears' lead to 11-6.
WashU responded with four runs in the top of the eighth inning.
Miller was hit by a pitch to lead things off and O'Connor drilled a homer to left. With two outs, Malis doubled to left field and
Anthony Gross singled to center, scoring Malis. Jacinto singled through the right side, scoring Gross for a 15-6 lead.
Jacinto finished 3-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored while Miller went 3-for-4 with three runs score and four RBI. Mazone went 3-for-5 with one RBI and three runs scored while Malis finished 3-for-5 with three runs score and one RBI.
Hank Weiss earned the win on the mound, pitching five innings with 11 strikeouts and two earned runs.
WashU returns to action tomorrow with a 2 p.m. game against Alfred State.
