Baseball Picks Up A Pair of Wins Over Luther to Complete Three-Game Sweep

St. Louis, Mo. – The Washington University in St. Louis baseball team completed the sweep of Luther on Sunday afternoon with a pair of wins over the Norse. The Bears are now 9-2 on the season.
 
Game 1: WashU 9, Luther 5
Luther scored first, putting up a run in the top of the first inning. Cullen Stamp led off with a single to third base and then stole second. Gabe Atkins drew a walk. Both runners moved up a bases because of an error and Stamp went on to score for the 1-0 lead.
 
The Bears exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the second inning to go up 8-1.
 
Clayton Miller drew a lead-off walk and scored as Broghan O'Connor doubled to left field. O'Connor moved up to third on a passed ball followed by a Zac Malis walk. Brandon Buday singled to right field, driving in O'Connor and Malis to give the Bears their first lead of the game.
 
Chris Jacinto continued the offensive production, singling to center to bring in Malis. Both Jacinto and Buday stole a base to both get in scoring position and Shane Pellegrino was hit by a pitch to load the bases for WashU. Kaden Bernhard reached first on a throwing error by the pitching, scoring both Buday and Jacinto for a 5-1 Bears edge.
 
Joe Georger hit a sac fly to center, scoring Pellegrino. Miller, in his second at-bat of the inning, was hit by a pitch. O'Connor drilled a triple to right center, scoring both Bernhard and Miller for the 8-1 advantage.
 
The Bears added another run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Malis got things going with a double to left and then, with two outs, Jacinto drilled a double to left field, scoring Malis for a 9-1 lead.
 
Luther put up a run in the top of the sixth inning. With two outs, Peyton Lindmark drew a walk and scored on a Charlie Rubendall double to left.
 
The Norse came out to score another run in the top of the seventh. With two outs, Atkins singled to short and was driven in by a Sebben triple to left center to make it a 9-3 game.
 
Luther continued to chip away, scoring another run in the top of the eighth inning. Will Heithoff reached on an error and advanced to second on an obstruction call. Heithoff moved up a base on a ground out by Lindmark and scored on a Rubendall single to left field.
 
The Norse added its final run in the bottom of the ninth, starting with a walk from Stamp who then advanced to second on an error and to third on a wild pitch. Sebben drove in Stamp with a ground out to short.
 
Jacinto went 3-for-5 with two RBI and one run scored while O'Connor finished 2-for-4 with three RBI and one run scored.
 
Will Henkel earned the win on the mound, going six innings with 11 strikeouts in 24 at-bats.
 
Game 2: WashU 7, Luther 3
Luther got on the board first in the top of the first inning as Rubendall started things off with a triple to right field and then scored on an Atkins ground out.
 
The Bears took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second, starting with a Braden Mazone lead-off walk. He then advanced to second on a passed ball, advanced to third on a balk and scored on a wild pitch. Broghan O'Connor followed with a walk and moved up on a Justin Zachery ground out to third. O'Connor moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball.
 
WashU added another run in the bottom of the third inning. Pellegrino led off with a single to left and Mazone drew another walk. Miller singled to right field to load the bases and O'Connor drove in Pellegrino with a sac fly to center.
 
Luther scored a run in the top of the fifth inning. Lindmark led off with a single to left, stole second base and advanced to third on an error. Barrett Lindmark drove in Peyton Lindmark with a ground out to second.
 
The Bears added a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, starting with a lead-off double and advanced to third on a Buday single to left. Jacinto reached on a fielder's choice and Goldberg scored. Jacinto stole second and scored on a Mazone single to center, giving the Bears a 5-2 lead.
 
WashU added its final two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Buday got things going with a triple to right and scored as Pellegrino singled to center. Pellegrino stole second and Mazone drew a walk. Pellegrino went on to score as Connor Lindsey singled to left.
 
Luther scored one more run in the top of the ninth. Sebben led off with a single to center and moved up on a Heithoff single. Peyton Lindmark reached base on a fielder's choice and Sebben moved up to third before scoring on a Noah Pinnette single to center.
 
Mazone finished 2-for-2 with one RBI and one run scored while Pellegrino finished 2-for-5 with two runs scored and one RBI. Buday finished 2-for-4 with one run scored.
 
Ryan Kirkendall picked up the win on the mound, pitching 4.2 innings with two strikeouts and one earned run.
 
The Bears travel to Memphis, Tenn. this week for a three-game stretch, starting with Westfield State on Tuesday, Alfred State on Wednesday and Rhodes College on Thursday. WashU returns home for a four-game series against Gustavus Adolphus next weekend.
