Box Score St. Peters, Minn. – The No. 7 Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis team defeated top-ranked University of Chicago in the semifinal of the ITA Indoor Nationals on Saturday afternoon. The Bears move on to face No. 2 Case Western Reserve University tomorrow in the championship.
WashU started the day with wins at first and second doubles.
Abhi Ramireddy and
Phuc Huynh topped Andrei Leonov and Derek Hsieh 8-2 at first doubles while
Pato Garcia Muriel and
Colin Scruggs beat Arjun Asokumar and Pat Otero at second doubles.
Jeremy Ouyang and
Jared Phillips fell to John Walentowicz and Biren Reddy 8-3 at third doubles.
Ramireddy also picked up a win over Asokumar at first singles. After falling 3-6 in the first set, Ramireddy came back to win 6-2, 6-4. Phillips defeated Walentowicz 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 at third singles while
James Shaheen topped Leonov 7-5, 1-6, 6-4 at fifth singles. Scruggs won a thriller at sixth singles over Jack Wong, winning the first set 7-6(6) and the second set 7-6(12).
Huynh lost to Hsieh 6-3, 6-3 at second singles while Garcia Muriel fell to Emil Grantcharov 6-0, 7-5 at fourth singles.
The Bears face last year's ITA Indoor national champion CWRU at 9 a.m. on Sunday morning.
