Box Score St. Peter's, Minn. – The No. 7 Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis team defeated No. 8 North Carolina Wesleyan University 5-2 in the opening round of the ITA Indoor Nationals, hosted by Gustavus Adolphus.
Abhi Ramireddy and
Phuc Huynh defeated NCWU's John Falke and Tshepo Mosarwa 8-5 at first doubles while
Colin Scruggs and
Pato Garcia Muriel topped Albert Sitwell and Juan Agustin Rivas 8-4 at third doubles.
Gaurav Singh and
Scott Yamamoto fell to Sean Keane and Diego Segovia 8-4 at second doubles.
The Bears clinched the match with wins at second, third and fifth singles.
Huynh went down 7-5 in the first set of second singles to Luca Knese but bounced back to finish out 6-2, 6-0.
Jared Phillips topped Falk 6-4, 6-2 at third singles and Garcia Muriel defeated Augusto Roca 7-6, 6-4 at fifth singles.
Singh lost to Segovia 6-4, 6-4 at fourth singles. Ramireddy's match against Mosarwa at first singles and
James Shaheen's match against Andy Fanzaga at sixth singles remained unfinished once the Bears' clinched.
WashU will play the winner of No. 1 Chicago and No. 17 Gustavus Adolphus – playing at 7:30 p.m. tonight – tomorrow in a noon match.
