St. Louis, Mo. – The No. 22 Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team lost to (RV) Illinois Wesleyan 76-50 on Wednesday afternoon at the Field House. The Bears are now 4-1 on the season.
The Bears struggled against the Titans' stifling defense, shooting 14-for-55 (25.5%) from the floor and 3-for-11 (21.7%) from 3-point range.
WashU had a small, 5-2, lead to open the game behind a 3-pointer from junior
Drake Kindsvater and a layup from sophomore
Calvin Kapral.
The Titans, however, went on a 13-0 run over the next five minutes to go up 15-5.
A pair of free throws from first-year
Jake Davis and Kapral cut it down to six, 15-9 with 12:29 on the clock and a 3-pointer from first-year
Ryan Cohen made it 18-12 with 10:44 remaining.
Following another 3-pointer from Cohen at the 9:46 mark, the Bears remained six points behind but IWU closed out the have on a 14-4 run to take a 40-19 lead at the half.
A 3-pointer from the Titan's Harrison Wilmsen to open the second half extended it to a 24-point lead. From there, the Bears did not get closer than 21 points, with IWU opening up as much as a 30-point advantage.
Kindsvater had 11 points and eight rebounds while Cohen also had 11 points. Kapral finished with nine points and six rebounds.
The Bears return to action on Sunday at Rhodes for a 3 p.m. tip.
