Memphis, Tenn. – The No. 22 Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team edged Rhodes 78-74 on Sunday afternoon behind a career-high 21 points from junior
Kyle Beedon. The Bears are now 5-1 on the year.
Beedon went 8-for-12 from the floor and hit five of nine 3-pointers en route to the career high. Junior
Drake Kindsvater scored 15 points while junior
Hayden Doyle had 11 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Sophomore
Calvin Kapral also scored 11 points in the win.
The Bears opened the game on a 7-0 run including four points scored by Kindsvater.
Rhodes put its first points of the day on the board at the 16:26 mark on a Trevor Lombard 3-pointer but Beedon quickly followed with his first shot from distance for a 10-3 edge at 16:00. The Lynx scored seven-straight to tie the game and then take a 12-10 lead with just under 14 minutes on the clock.
The game remained within three points until a jumper from Doyle at 8:47 extended it to 23-18 and a pair of free throws from sophomore
Yogi Oliff put the Bears up by seven points, 25-18.
Beedon netted a 3-pointer followed by a steal and a jumper to make it a 10-point, 30-20 game with 7:07 on the clock, prompting a Rhodes timeout.
A Rhodes' layup from Cass Ramberg out of the timeout closed the gap to single-digits again but 12 seconds later, Beedon drained another shot from distance for a 33-22 lead.

Ryan Cohen at 5:01 gave the Bears its first of three 14-point leads, 38-24. Lombard hit a shot from distance but Oliff then netted a 3-pointer to make it 41-27 at 4:25.
After Rhodes brought it down to a 10-point gap, Kapral put in back-to-back layups, making it a 45-31 game with 57 seconds remaining. Lombard netted a pair of free throws for the Lynx to put the Bears ahead 45-33 at the half.
Oliff opened the second half with a shot from behind the arc to give WashU a 15 point lead, 48-33. A jumper from Beedon with 15:44 on the clock pushed it to 16, the largest lead of the game, 57-41 before Rhodes went on a 9-0 run to cut the Bears' edge to 57-50 with 12:29 on the clock.
Another 7-0 Rhodes' run made it a two-point game, 59-57, with 8:08 on the clock. The Lynx brought it down to a one-point game with a Shawn Jones, Jr. dunk at 6:19 but the Bears scored five-straight to go up seven points, 68-61 with 4:45 remaining.
As the clock wound down, the Bears held on to a lead of as many as seven points, but the Lynx were within two points with just nine seconds remaining as a pair of free throws from Phil Dotson made it a 76-74 game.
Kindsvater closed things out with a pair of free throws with just four seconds remaining, holding onto the win for WashU.
The Bears return home on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. game against Webster. The game will serve as Faculty and Staff Appreciation Night, The Hidden Opponent Game and Green Dot Night.
