St. Louis, Mo. – The No. 2 Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team defeated Sewanee 4-0 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament to advance to the Sweet 16 next weekend. It is the 18
th time in school history that the Bears have reached the Sweet 16.
Sophomore
Grace Ehlert scored a pair of first-half goals to lead the Bears past the Tigers and
Jessica Greven and
Madeline Allburn added two insurance goals for the 4-0 victory.
Ehlert scored her first goal of the game at the 20:20 mark on a pass from sophomore
Ella Koleno. The ball bounced between the crossbar and the turf and found its way into the net.
Ehlert scored again, unassisted, in the 33
rd minute of play to make it a 2-0 game for WashU. She is now tied for a team-leading seven goals.
In the 74
th minute, Sewanee committed a foul in the box resulting in a penalty kick for the Bears. Greven put in her fourth penalty kick of the season for a 3-0 WashU lead.
Finally, in the 85
th minute, first-year
Julia Moore sent a hard pass towards goal and Allburn tapped it in for the fourth goal of the game to secure the 4-0 win and send the Bears to the Sweet 16.
WashU dominated on both ends, registering 24 total shots with 12 on goal while holding the Tigers to just two shots, none of which were on goal.
It is WashU's 18
th shutout of the season which tops the NCAA.
WashU will learn its destination for the Sweet 16 on Monday.
