St. Louis, Mo. – The No. 2 Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team defeated Calvin 4-1 on Friday morning to advance to the Elite 8 for the 13
th time in program history.
The Bears will play the winner of Loras and UW-La Crosse tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. The winner of that game will head to the Final Four in Salem, Va. beginning on Nov. 30.
WashU wasted no time putting a goal on the board as sophomore
Grace Ehlert scored her eighth goal of the season on a pass from
Gaelen Clayton just 2:44 in.
With less than two minutes left in the first half, Calvin scored the equalizer as Katherine Bergman scored on a pass from Lindsey Houtsma to make it a 1-1 game at the break.
Fired up following the halftime break, the Bears scored what would be the game-winning goal just 39 seconds into the second half. Clayton dribbled around Calvin defenders and fired a hard shot in to give WashU the lead.
WashU added its first insurance goal in the 71
st minute as
Kate Flynn scored a long ball from an
Ella Koleno pass to make it a 3-1 game.
Clayton went on to score her team-leading ninth goal of the season in the 70
th minute to give the Bears a 4-1 lead which held until the end.
In goal, senior
Sidney Conner made one save which was an incredible jumping save on a Mia Judd shot in the 19
th minute.
WashU recorded 12 shots with seven on goal while Calvin had four shots with two on goal.
