NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Washington University in St. Louis women's basketball team dropped its second and final contest in the two-day Scholar's Classic, Saturday, November 11. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) took down the Bears by a final score of 70-58. With the setback, WashU's record sits at 0-2.
First-year
Amelia Rosin hauled in a team-high six rebounds. First-year
Lexy Harris and McBeth were each credited with five rebounds.
WashU converted on 22 of its 58 field goal attempts (37.9 percent) and drained four of its 18 three pointers (22.2 percent).
MIT started the game on an 8-0 run to generate the quick lead. Sophomore
Liv Muse recorded WashU's first points of the contest on a jumper with 3:55 left in the opening quarter.
Loftus connected on a jump shot to trim the deficit to eight, 12-4. After the first 10 minutes of action, MIT registered a 13-point advantage, 17-4.
After the pause in action, Rich drilled a three ball on the first possession of the second to put the score at 17-7, in favor of MIT. The Bears scored three more times to cut the deficit to just four, 17-13, with 7:46 left in the half. First-year
Catherine Goodwin hit a jumper and McBeth connected on two field goals. However, MIT went on a run to push their cushion to nine, 22-13.
With 2:57 remaining in the frame, first-year
Alyssa Hughes welcomed a transition three to put the Bears within four, 24-20. With time ticking down in the first half, McBeth converted a layup with just two seconds left. Heading into the intermission, MIT held the two-point, 29-27, lead.
MIT's halftime adjustments put them ahead by 15, 45-30, with 5:28 left in the third. However, WashU was able to end the period with two made free throws to cut MIT's lead to 10, 52-42.
In the fourth, WashU got as close as seven on a Loftus layup, but MIT's offense was able to hit a few shots down the stretch to close out the 70-58 victory over the Bears.
The Bears will turn their attention to the program's 2023-24 home opener, Wednesday, November 15. WashU will square off with Greenville University for a 7 p.m. tipoff inside of the Field House.
