Women’s Basketball Drops Season Opener to Johns Hopkins

NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Washington University in St. Louis women's basketball team made its return to the hardwood, Saturday, November 10 against Johns Hopkins University. A stellar collegiate debut from first-year Lexy Harris was not enough as JHU defeated WashU by a final score of 69-56. 
 
Harris secured her first collegiate double-double with a game-high 18 points and a team-high 10 rebounds.  
 
First-year Sidney Rogers notched seven points, while first-years Alyssa Hughes and Amelia Rosin each earned six points. 
 
WashU finished the game shooting 20-for-55 (36.4%), including 3-for-15 (20.0%) from beyond the arc.  
 
The Blue Jays grabbed 48 rebounds (21 offensive), compared to WashU's 39 rebounds (13 offensive). 
 
The Bears converted 13-of-21 (61.9%) of its charity stripe chances. 
 
In the first quarter, JHU took the early 10-2 advantage. The Bears answered with back-to-back buckets from Rosin and sophomore Liv Muse to trim the deficit to four, 10-6. After a Blue Jay made basket, Hughes connected on her first collegiate three-pointer to put WashU within three, with 3:04 remaining in the quarter. After Harris grabbed an offensive board and hauled in her first collegiate bucket, WashU trailed by two, 14-12, as the first quarter came to an end. 
 
WashU earned its first lead of the season with 4:37 remaining in the second quarter. Junior Brenna Loftus put the Bears in front by one, 23-22, with a layup. After the Bears went nearly three minutes without a bucket, Harris converted on a jumper to give WashU the slim, 27-26, cushion with 1:05 remaining in the half.  
 
After a Hopkins made free-throw attempt, Rogers, with time expiring, drilled a jumper to give WashU a two-point, 29-17, advantage heading into halftime. 
 
With the first 20 minutes in the books, WashU drained 12 of its 31 attempts (38.7 field goal percentage) and cashed in a pair of three-pointers. JHU recorded 26 rebounds (11 offensive), compared to WashU's 19 rebounds (five offensive). 
 
After the intermission, Johns Hopkins opened the third quarter on a 7-0 run to grab the five-point, 34-29, lead. WashU secured its first bucket of the second half on a sophomore Nailah McBeth layup, with 7:49 left in the third quarter. 
 
The Bears then notched back-to-back layups by first-year Catherine Goodwin and Harris to cut the deficit to just one, 41-40. However, JHU responded with a five-point run to grab the six-point, 46-40, cushion with just under a minute remaining in the quarter. 
 
Johns Hopkins capitalized on a last second WashU foul and pushed their lead to eight, 50-42, on a free-throw. After three quarters of action, JHU held the 50-42 advantage. 
 
The first basket from either side came two and a half minutes into the fourth on a Blue Jay layup. After a Harris basket, JHU converted on a jumper to push their lead to 10, 54-44. With 3:23 left in regulation, Johns Hopkins widened their cushion to 14, 62-48. 
 
WashU could not erase the deficit as Johns Hopkins won the season opener by a final score of 69-56. 
 
WashU will conclude the Scholar's Classic tomorrow, Saturday, November 11, with a contest against Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Tipoff from John A. Paulson Center is slated for 1 p.m. EST.
