Men’s Soccer Suffers Heartbreaking Setback Against Brandeis

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team saw a heartbreaking University Athletic Association defeat against Brandeis University, Saturday, October 7. With just 59 seconds remaining in the match, the Judges recorded the game-winning tally to stun the Bears, 2-1. After the setback, WashU's record slipped to 4-5-1 (0-2-0 UAA), while Brandeis' record upped to 3-5-3 (1-0-1 UAA).

The Bears outshot the Judges by a mark of 13-12. However, Brandeis recorded more shots on goal (7-6). Both UAA squads earned six corner chances and notched five saves.

Sophomore Zach Susee, senior Owen Culver, and graduate student Christopher Alwang each manufactured a team-high two shots. Susee and Alwang both tallied two shots on goal in the setback.

WashU had several early chances, but could not capitalize. Senior Carl Vestberg registered the first shot of the match in the third minute. The Bears' best chance came in the ninth minute. WashU sent a through ball that found the foot of Susse at the top of the 18-yard box, but the Brandeis keeper was able to corral the chance, which kept the match scoreless.

The Bears finally broke through in the 25th minute. From around midfield, Culver delivered a perfect pass to a flashing Susse, who was able to beat his defender while staying onsides. Once Susse settled the ball at the 20-yard line, he just had to beat the keeper. Susse was able to put the shot in the corner of the net to open up the scoring as WashU took the early, 1-0, lead. The goal marked the fourth of the year for Susse and Culver's helper was his second of the season.

Brandeis was able to knot the score at 1-1 in the 38th minute. After a shot from the baseline that was saved by first-year Owen Ross, the Bears failed to clear the rebound. On the rebound, the Judges were able to capitalize and even the score.

With 45 minutes in the books, WashU dialed up 11 shots compared to Brandeis' three.

The second half saw back-and-forth play, with no team controlling a majority of the possession.

The Bears had a couple of chances, but the Brandeis keeper managed to keep the match tied.

However, with just 59 ticks remaining in the contest, the Judges notched the game-winner. The shot evaded Ross and squeaked just past the left post to give Brandeis their first lead of the match, 2-1.

On the ensuing kickoff, WashU sprinted down the field and managed to create a decent chance, but the Brandeis backline was able to stand its ground. With the scoreboard at 10 seconds left, the Judges cleared the ball down the pitch to secure the 2-1 victory.

The Bears will make the trek east to New York to tangle with UAA foe New York University, Saturday, October 14. Kickoff at Gaelic Park is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
