Men’s Soccer Drops UAA Contest to New York

NEWARK, N.J. - After a scoreless first half, the Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team surrendered a trio of second half tallies and dropped its University Athletic Association match, 3-1, to New York University, Saturday, October 14 at Frederick Douglass Field. After the setback, the Bears' record now sits at 4-6-1 (0-3-0 UAA), while the Violets' record jumped to 4-5-3 (2-1-0 UAA).

Both programs racked up 18 shots in the contest. However, NYU topped the Bears with its 10 shots on frame, compared to WashU's eight.

First-year Owen Ross scooped up a career-high seven saves in the setback.

Offensively, WashU was led by senior Owen Culver who belted a match-high six shots. Senior John Daniels accumulated three shots. Junior Joseph Hipskind, sophomore Zach Susee, and first-year Quentin Gomez each recorded a pair of shots.

WashU had its first opportunity in the fifth minute of play as Daniels sent a shot to the bottom left of the frame that was swallowed up by the Violet keeper to preserve the tie.

The Bears then rattled off four shots in a span of two and half minutes, but could not find the back as the net as the game remained scoreless.

With the first half coming to a close, Ross made a nifty save to his left to keep NYU on the board as the match progressed to the intermission period.

After the first 45, WashU outshot the Violets by a mark of 10-8.

NYU broke the scoreless tie in the 58th minute to put the Violets ahead, 1-0. Moments after a WashU yellow card, New York padded its lead with an insurance goal in the 77th minute.

After the Violets made four substitutions, NYU recorded its third goal in the 85th minutes to grab the 3-0 cushion.

However, just 67 seconds later, Gomez landed his first collegiate goal off a helper from junior Landon Green in the 86th minute to cut the deficit to 3-1.

However, WashU could not complete the hefty comeback as NYU took the match by a final score of 3-1.

The Bears will remain on the road for the program's next UAA contest. WashU is scheduled to take on Carnegie Mellon University, Friday, October 20 in the Steel City. Kickoff is slated for 2:30 p.m. at CMU Soccer Field.
