Men’s Soccer Sees Win Streak Snapped by Rochester

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team battled the University of Rochester, in a University Athletic Association match, in tough weather conditions, Sunday, October 29. A 66th minute goal from the Yellowjackets proved to be the difference as Rochester defeated WashU by a final score of 1-0. With the setback, the Bears' record now sits at 7-7-1 (2-4-0 UAA), while Rochester's record upped to 8-2-5 (2-2-2 UAA).

WashU held the hefty shots advantage, 18-3. The Bears recorded five shots on goal compared to Rochester's two.

Senior Owen Culver produced a match-high seven shots (three on target). Junior Landon Green notched four shots, while first year Ethan Wirtschafter garnered two shots.

Between the posts, first year Cal L'Hommedieu was credited with one save.

WashU's offense saw some early life as Culver and Wirtschafter each tallied a shot in first three minutes of action. However, the Rochester keeper was able to keep the Bears off the board.

Later in the frame, WashU welcomed three straight corner chances in the 32nd and 33rd minutes, but could not produce a score.

The remainder of the first half saw back-and-forth action with no shots being recorded in the final twelve minutes.

After the first 45, WashU registered five shots, while the Yellowjackets took one shot.

WashU spent the majority of the second half in Rochester's defensive third, but could not get a clean shot off.

With WashU controlling most of the possession, the Yellowjackets had one golden chance to score and they did not miss their opportunity. Off a turnover, Rochester gained possession near midfield and raced down the right side of the pitch. The Yellowjacket player sent a cross past the far side of the net and the cross found the foot of a Rochester athlete. The shot found the back of the net to give the Yellowjackets the 1-0 lead in the 66th minute.

With time ticking down, the Bears produced one last offensive surge. Culver received the ball just outside of the 18-yard box and Culver's shot went just wide of the right post. Rochester was able to run out the clock on their ensuing goal kick to secure the 1-0 victory.

The Bears will conclude their 2023 regular season with a senior day UAA contest against No. 24 Chicago, Saturday, November 4. The match will begin at 1:30 p.m. at Francis Olympic Field, with senior day festivities taking place before the match.
