Men’s Soccer Upended by No. 21 Chicago on Senior Day

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team concluded their 2023 season with a University Athletic Association and senior day showdown against No. 21 Chicago. After a scoreless first 45, the Maroons scored twice in the second to defeat the Bears by a final score of 2-0.

With the loss, WashU's record stands at 7-8-1 (2-5 UAA), while the Maroons record jumped to 9-2-5 (4-1-2 UAA).

Prior to the match, the team honored its seven seniors – Rabee Haidari, John Daniels, Christopher Alwang, Carl Vestberg, Reece Nicholson, Trevor Perez, and Owen Culver

Chicago outshot WashU by a final tally of 16-7. The Maroons landed six shots on frame compared to WashU's two.

Culver produced a team-high three shots, while four Bears each recorded one shot.

Between the posts, first-year Cal L'Hommedieu was credited with four saves in the contest.

WashU recorded its first shot in the 21st minute as junior Landon Green sent a shot off target. Just a minute later, Culver dialed up a shot that also sailed off target.

The Bears had their best chance in the 34th minute. Culver landed a nifty shot, but the Maroon keeper was there to scoop up the chance and to keep the match scoreless.

Head coach Joe Clarke shuffled his line by making four substitutions late in the first 45. With fresh legs in the match, junior Joseph Hipskind landed a shot in the 45th minute, but could not find the back of the frame.

After the first half, the score remained even at 0-0.

With Chicago threatening, a Maroon player sent a cross from the baseline. The cross evaded L'Hommedieu and found the foot of a sliding Maroon near the far post. The sliding Chicago player was able to break the scoreless tie and give the Maroons the 1-0 lead in the 67th minute.

Just 40 seconds later, Chicago added an insurance goal to push their advantage to two.

WashU's offense attempted to muster a comeback, but Chicago's defensive line stood strong and preserved the 2-0 victory over WashU.

This concludes the 2023 regular season for the Bears.
