ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Behind two more goals from senior
Owen Culver, the Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team concluded its 2023 non-conference slate with a home match against Greenville University, Wednesday, October 25. The Bears, who recorded their third straight shutout, blanked the Panthers by a final score of 2-0.
With the victory, WashU's record jumped to 7-6-1, while GU's record fell to 7-7-4.
The Bears outshot the Panthers by a final tally of 15-6. WashU landed six shots on frame, compared to Greenville's two.
Culver recorded a match-high five shots, while first years
Anthony Rolando and
Ethan Wirtschafter were each credited with two shots. Six Bears landed one shot each in the victory.
The first shot of the match for either program saw a goal for the Bears. After a Greenville foul outside of the box, WashU welcomed a free kick. On the ensuing free kick, Culver ripped a shot towards the upper right-hand part of the frame. The Panther keeper made a last-ditch effort, but the shot was perfectly placed to give WashU the early, 1-0, lead in the 12th minute.
Greenville earned their first shot in the 35th minute. The shot was off target as WashU held its 1-0 advantage. After the shot, the Panthers notched back-to-back corner chances. However, the Bear defense stood strong to preserve the lead.
With WashU spending most of the first 45 deep in the Greenville defensive third, Wirtschafter made a nifty move to beat his defender. After side stepping his defender, the Panther player committed a foul in the box to warrant a Bear penalty kick. Culver stepped up to the challenge and clanked his penalty kick attempt off the right post and in to open up a comfortable 2-0 cushion in the 38th minute.
The Panthers had their best chance of the match in the 41st minute. GU had numbers in WashU's defensive half and sent in a shot. Sophomore keeper
Adam Mallalieu got a piece of the shot, but the ball kept rolling near the goal. As the ball was inches from crossing the line, a Bear defender made a sliding stop with his foot to keep GU off the board.
Entering the intermission, the Bears maintained their two-tally lead. With 45 minutes in the books, WashU produced eight shots, while Greenville garnered three.
The second half saw WashU's defensemen produce technical touches to keep the Panthers offense from threatening.

Nate Morrison attempt that went wide right. After that, WashU welcomed several late second half shots, but the GU defense kept the lead to two.
With time winding down, the Bears earned a corner kick and sent the ball up the field as the final horn blew.
In the end, WashU won the non-conference contest by a final score of 2-0.
The Bears will resume University Athletic Association action on Sunday, October 29 with a home contest against the University of Rochester. Kickoff from Francis Olympic Field is slated for 1:30 p.m.
