Culver’s Two Tallies Lifts Men’s Soccer Over Carnegie Mellon, 3-0

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team battled through the rain and wind in a University Athletic Association match against Carnegie Mellon University, Friday, October 20. With the contest scoreless in the 75th minute, senior Owen Culver welcomed a pair of goals, just four minutes apart, to push the Bears past CMU by a final score of 3-0.

With the win, WashU's record now stands at 5-6-1 (1-3-0 UAA), while the Tartans' record slipped to 7-4-3 (0-2-2 UAA).

The Bears outshot the Tartans by a 13-7 clip, while securing five shots on goal compared to CMU's zero. WashU generated eight second half shots.

Culver welcomed a match-high four shots in the contest. Senior John Daniels was credited with three shots, while graduate student Christopher Alwang and sophomore Zach Susee each garnered a pair of shots.

Between the posts, sophomore Adam Mallalieu registered his first shutout of the season.

WashU dialed up some early offensive pressure that led to the Bears generating the first shot of the contest. Alwang recorded the first shot in the third minute of action. Alwang's shot was sent to the bottom right portion of the net and CMU's keeper scooped up the early chance to keep the match tied at 0-0.

Alwang tallied another shot, in the seventh minute, that missed the frame. Daniels then sent a shot towards the net in the 11th minute. The ensuing shot sailed over the top of the net as the match remained scoreless.

The WashU defense played a solid first half, not allowing CMU to retain substantial possession in the Bears defensive third.

With shots at a premium in the first 45, the Bears managed to earn two more shots in the opening frame.

The rest of the first half saw back-and-forth action, but neither team was able to get on the board as the first half a saw a 0-0 tie.

At the end of the first period, WashU sent five shots, while the Tartans were credited with four shots.

In the second, WashU had a prime chance in the 62nd minute. After a cross was sent in the box, Daniels made a sprawling attempt and got his right boot on the ball. The shot went just right of the net as the match remained scoreless.

In the 75th minute, WashU was awarded a free kick just five yards outside the box. Culver took the set piece opportunity and made the most of it. Culver's free kick was laced and the ball was sent in towards the upper right of the frame. The Tartans' keeper made a diving attempt, but Culver's kick was perfectly placed and sailed past the keeper and into the net to give WashU the lead, 1-0, with 15 minutes left to play.

However, Culver was not done yet. Just four minutes later, Culver recorded his second tally of the match. Culver had some separation from his defender and sent in a shot from distance. The shot from the left side of the pitch was delivered and found the right side of the frame as the Bears earned some insurance with the 2-0 advantage in the 80th minute.

With just 65 ticks remaining on the clock, junior Eugene Heger sent a through ball that found an open junior Joseph Hipskind. With space on the pitch, Hipskind ran into the 18-yard box and delivered WashU's third goal of the match.

In the end, the Bears' welcomed their first UAA victory of the season with the 3-0 win over the Tartans of Carnegie Mellon.

The Bears will remain on the road their next contest. WashU will head to Cleveland to battle with Case Western Reserve University, Sunday, October 22. The match is set to begin at 12:30 p.m.
