ST. LOUIS, Mo. - After a scoreless first half, the No. 10 Emory University Eagles tallied a pair of goals in the second 45 to upend the Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team, 2-0, Sunday, October 1. With the setback in the University Athletic Association lid lifter, the Bears' record sits at 3-4-1 (0-1 UAA), while EU's record climbed to 7-1-2 (1-0 UAA).
In total, WashU outshot Emory by a final count of 13-10. However, the Eagles landed four shots on frame compared to WashU's three.
Between the posts, first-year keeper
Owen Ross earned two saves.
In the first 12 minutes of action, Culver belted three shots. Of the three shots, one was blocked, one was wide right, and one was saved by the Eagle keeper.
Emory controlled most of the first half possession, but the Bears were able to generate more scoring chances. Junior Eugne Heger and first-year
Ethan Wirtschafter both recorded shots in the first half. Additionally, WashU manufactured a pair of corner kick opportunities, but the Emory defense was able to keep the Bears off the board.
After the first half, WashU secured six shots, while Emory was credited with three. With 45 minutes in the books, the match remained scoreless.
With both teams vying to break the tie, Emory found the back of the net in the 64th minute to snag the 1-0 advantage.
Later in the half, WashU had several chances to tie the match, but could not breakthrough.
In the 80th minute, first-year
Quentin Gomez beat his defender around the Emory 30-yard line and charged towards the net. With the Eagle keeper attempting to break up the play, Gomez chipped the ball over the keeper. The shot landed just over the crossbar to keep the score at 1-0.
Emory was awarded a free kick five yards outside of the box in the 86th minute. The Eagles were able to take advantage of the chance and tack on an insurance goal to make the lead 2-0.
The Bears attempted to make a comeback, but the Eagles thwarted WashU's efforts.
In the end, Emory won the UAA opener by a final score of 2-0.
The Bears will hit the road for their next contest, Wednesday, October 4. WashU will make the short trip to Webster University to take on the Gorloks at World Wide Technology Soccer Park. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
