Atlanta, Ga. – Four players reached double-figures as the (RV) Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team edged No. 16 Emory University, 72-69, on Sunday afternoon. The win marks the Bears second ranked-opponent win this weekend and puts them tied for first in the UAA with Emory.
First-year
Will Grudzinski led the Bears with 18 points on 6-for-10 shooting from 3-point range. Graduate
Charlie Jacob netted 17 points while sophomore
Hayden Doyle had 10 points, four rebounds, four assists and two blocks. Sophomore
Drake Kindsvater also scored 10 points with four rebounds as well as three assists and four steals.
Emory went up 8-3 with 15:02 on the clock following back-to-back jumpers from Mason Johnson. With an Eagles' 10-5 lead, the Bears went on a 5-0 run starting with a 3-pointer from Doyle to pull even at 10 midway through the first half.
WashU took its first lead of the half at 10:08 with a 3-pointer from Jacob to go up 13-12. That sparked a 10-0 run for the Bears which included a 3-pointer from junior
Jabari Chiphe and two jumpers from Doyle.
The Eagles netted six-straight to cut the Bears' advantage down to 25-22 with 5:52 on the clock and brought it to two points less than 30 seconds later.
A jumper and a 3-pointer from Jacob gave WashU a 34-26 edge with 2:27 remaining and Emory scored the final three points to send the Bears into halftime with a slight 34-29 lead.
Emory came out of the break to score the first four points and cut it to a one-point gap, 34-33.
Sophomore
Jake Wolf hit a jumper and Doyle netted three free throws to go up 39-33 with 16:49 on the clock. Emory went on to score the next six points to tie things up at 39 apiece.
Emory took a slight 55-54 lead with 8:32 on the clock and scored the next five points to go up 60-54. The Eagles extended the lead to seven points until WashU scored five-straight to cut it to a two-point, 63-61 game.
With Emory up three, Grudzinski drilled a 3-pointer at 1:30 to even the score at 67 apiece. Emory scored one final jumper to take a 69-67 edge with just under one minute remaining but a 3-pointer from Grudzinki gave the Bears a one-point lead. Kindsvater ended things with a pair of free throws en route to the three-point lead.
WashU shot 12-for-24 (50%) from 3-point range and went 12-for-15 (80%) from the line.
The Bears are back home next Friday to start the second half of the UAA schedule with a 7:30 p.m. game against the University of Rochester.
