St. Louis, Mo. – The (RV) Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team edged Brandeis 73-65 on Friday evening in UAA play. The Bears are now 2-0 in the UAA and sit in first place as the lone team that has not lost a conference game yet.
Four players finished in double figures, led by sophomore
Drake Kindsvater's 16 points, seven rebounds, three steals and three assists. Sophomore
Hayden Doyle netted 15 points while graduate
Charlie Jacob scored 14 points. Sophomore
Jake Wolf notched his first career double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
The Bears went on an 8-0 run to open the game behind five points from Kindsvater and a 3-pointer from Doyle. Brandeis scored five-straight before first-year
Will Grudzinski drilled a shot from distance and Jacob hit a jumper to go up 13-5 with 14:18 on the clock.
Wolf hit a 3-pointer followed by a layup and junior
Jabari Chiphe netted a 3-pointer to give the Bears a 21-9 lead with 11:20 remaining.
With the Bears up 10 points, Brandeis went on a 9-0 run to cut it down to a one-point WashU lead with 3:35 left in the first half. WashU added four points on jumpers from Doyle and Jacob to take a slight 30-25 edge.
With just over one minute remaining, Brandeis' Dylan Lien hit a jumper in the paint and tied things up with another jumper with 18 seconds on the clock to send the teams into the half tied 32-32.
Kindsvater started the second half off with a shot from distance, and the Judges' Toby Harris answered right back to leave the game tied at 35 apiece.
First-year
Yogi Oliff put in a bucket and then stole the ball, passing it up to Kindsvater for a layup to give the Bears a 44-37 edge with just over 15 left on the clock.
Four-straight free throws from the Judges cut WashU's lead to 44-41. Grudzinski drilled a 3-pointer to extend it back to six points, but Brandeis' Ethan Edwards quickly answered back with a 3-pointer.
The teams exchanged points for several minutes with the Bears up by as many as eight points. A 3-pointer and a jumper from Brandeis' Toby Harris closed WashU's lead to one point, 56-55 with 7:23 on the clock.
Three layups in a row from Jacob, Wolf and Kindsvater gave the Bears a seven-point, 62-55 lead but six points in a row from the Judges brought it back down to one point.
A jumper from Wolf started what turned into an 11-0 run for the Bears, followed by a 3-pointer from Jacob and a jumper from Doyle put WashU up 69-61 and Jacob netted four-straight free throws.
The Bears shot 9-for-19 (47.4%) from 3-point range and went 10-for-12 (83.3%) from the free throw line.
WashU returns to action on Sunday afternoon with a 12 p.m. game against (RV) NYU.
