Men's Basketball Holds Off NYU for 68-64 Win

St. Louis, Mo. – The (RV) Washington University in St. Louis improved to 3-0 in the UAA and 12-2 overall with a 68-64 win over (RV) NYU on Sunday afternoon in the Field House. The Bears sit in first place in the conference as the lone undefeated team.
 
Graduate senior Charlie Jacob scored 15 points and pulled down eight rebounds to lead the Bears while sophomore Drake Kindsvater netter 14 points and have four rebounds. First-year Yogi Oliff chipped in 11 points with three steals while sophomore Hayden Doyle had eight points, four rebounds and five assists.
 
The teams exchanged baskets in the opening minutes and WashU took a slight 7-4 lead following a 3-pointer from Jacob at the 16:12 mark. NYU scored five-straight to go up 9-7 less than two minutes later.
 
From there, the game was tied again at 9-9 and 11-11 before the Bears went on a 10-0 run to go up 19-11 with 10:41 remaining. Oliff's hit back-to-back jumpers and a 3-pointer and first-year Will Grudzinski drilled a 3-pointer following a Jake Wolf steal to give WashU the eight-point edge.
 
NYU cut it to one point following a 3-pointer and back-to-back layups, making it a 19-18 WashU game.
 
Jacob netted a 3-pointer just 10 seconds later and Doyle stole the ball and laid it in for a 24-18 lead with 8:07 on the clock.
 
Another 3-pointer from Jacob and an offensive put back from senior Nate Bloedorn extended WashU's lead to eight points again, 29-21, with 5:35 remaining, but NYU went on to score eight in a row in less than two minutes, tying the game at 29 apiece.
 
NYU tied things up at 32 before the Bears scored five in a row for a 37-32 lead with 25 seconds left in the first half. NYU's Nikola Lipovic drilled a 3-pointer with seven seconds on the clock to send WashU into halftime with a 37-35 edge.
 
Kindsvater came out of the break to score the first three points on an and-one play, putting the Bears up five points. Another Kindsvater jumper and a layup from Bloedorn pushed the lead to eight.
 
WashU built up its biggest lead of the game at that point, 12 points, following three-straight jumpers from Kindsvater, Jacob and Wolf, making it 50-38 with 12:44 on the clock. After an NYU free throw from Lipovic, senior Kevin Davet put in a layup to make it a 52-39 game in WashU's favor.
 
The Bears continued to hold a double-digit lead until the 9:05 mark when a pair of free throws from the Violets' Michael Savarino cut WashU's advantage to 57-49. Five more points from NYU cut it further to 57-54 with 7:04 remaining.
 
Kindsvater put in a dunk and hit a pair of free throws to extend the Bears' lead to 61-54. WashU and the Violets' exchanged baskets, with WashU keeping at least a five-point lead, until a bucket from NYU's Clark Quinn with 52 remaining made it a three-point, 65-62 game.
 
Oliff netted a jumper and Wolf put in the front end of two free throws to put the Bears up 68-62 with 15 seconds remaining. NYU's Spencer Freedman put in a final attempt, but the Bears held on for the four-point win.
 
WashU outrebounded NYU 33-24 and limited the Violets to 14-for-23 (39.7%) from the floor. The Bears went 28-for-55 (50.9%) from the floor and 7-for-20 (35%) from 3-point range.
 
The Bears hit the road next week for two UAA contests, starting with Case Western Reserve University on Friday at 7:30 p.m. ET followed by Carnegie Mellon on Sunday at 12 p.m. ET.
