St. Louis, Mo. – The Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team earned a 4-0 shutout victory at home on Wednesday evening over Greenville in the Bears' 2022 home opener at Francis Field.
WashU put together a complete team effort, dominating both ends of the field to collect its first win of the year.
The Bears wasted no time getting on the board, thanks to a header goal from first-year
Ethan Semelsberger off a corner kick from
Owen Culver in the opening minutes of the contest.
Around 10 minutes later,
Ryan An added the second goal for the Bears off a shot inside the box, as Culver provided his second assist of the night.
WU kept the pressure on and scored its third goal of the night in the 23
rd minute, following another header in the box goal, as
Joseph Hipskind connected on the header goal off a great cross into the box from
Landon Green.
Culver then scored his second goal of the year for the Bears' fourth goal of the evening with under 10 minutes before halftime off a put-back shot attempt from
Zach Susee, whose shot bounced off the post and right to the feet of Culver for the easy score.
Defensively, WashU kept Greenville in check and did not allow a single shot attempt in the opening 45 minutes of play.
In the second half, the Bears continued to find good looks on-goal, but were unable to add to their lead.
The Panthers nearly reached the scoring column late into the contest after firing off three shots inside the box in the span of six seconds, but fifth year senior
Matt Martin came up clutch with multiple impressive saves to keep the shutout in check.
In total, WashU outshot Greenville 22-7 and placed 12 shots-on-goal.
Culver finished the night with a goal and two assists, while recording a team-best three shots-on-goal.
Martin earned the victory in goal and collected the shutout, while finishing the night with five saves.
WashU will be back in action on Saturday at 7 PM at Francis Field against Millikin.
