Volleyball Sweeps Cal Lutheran, Defeats No. 16 Tufts 3-1 at East-West Classic

Atlanta, Ga. – The Washington University in St. Louis volleyball team had another great performance on Saturday and collected two big non-conference wins, defeating Cal Lutheran 3-0 and No. 16 Tufts 3-1 at the East-West Classic in Atlanta.
 
Washington U. was victorious over Cal Lutheran (25-13, 25-15, 32-30) and held off the No. 16 Jumbos (25-19, 23-25, 25-19, 25-23).
 
The Bears extend their winning streak to eight and remain unbeaten on the year (8-0). In addition, WashU concludes the highly touted East-West Classic with an impressive 3-0 mark.
 
Fifth-year senior Michaela Bach was selected to the East-West Classic All-Tournament Team after finishing the weekend with 54 kills, 38 digs, and seven blocks.
 
WashU will return to the Field House on Wednesday for Pride Night against Webster at 7:00 p.m.

WU had a collective .414 hitting percentage in the opening frame, with 14 kills and just two attack errors.
 
Outside of dropping the first point in the set, the Bears never trailed throughout the rest of the set.
 
After pushing ahead 13-6 following three consecutive kills from Jasmine Sells and Bach.
 
WU closed out the remainder of the set on a 9-3 scoring run, as Cal Lutheran finished the frame with just five kills and a .12 hitting mark.
 
The Bears never trailed in the second set as they kept their foot on the gas. Cal Lutheran managed to cut the lead down to just a point at 14-13, but the Bears answered right back with an 8-0 run to extend the lead out to a comfortable 22-13 margin, before closing out the set moments later at 25-15.
 
In the final set, it was a battle until the very end. WashU finished the set with 16 kills and took advantage of 12 attack errors from CLU.
 
The Bears clawed their way to a 15-12 lead but CLU managed to compile a 7-0 run as they retook the lead back at 19-15.
 
WU returned the favor with an 8-3 run, as kills from Bach, Sells, and Abby Li put the Bears back on top 23-22.

Following five more ties, WashU trailed 30-29, but once again found a way to rally back, winning the final three points on a kill from Sells, a service ace from Sam Buckley, and an attack error on match point to seal the contest.
 
WashU recorded 41 kills altogether with a .262 hitting mark and four blocks.
 
Bach finished the afternoon with a team-best 16 kills and also added 13 digs.
 
Sam Buckley led the team in assists with 31, while also adding a team-high 14 digs.
 
Lane Bohrer posted eight kills with 11 digs and Taryn Gurbach also reached double figures in digs with 10.

To close out the East-West Classic, the Bears notched 50 kills as a team with a .262 hitting clip for the match.
 
Tufts compiled 45 kills but had 26 attack errors with a .130 hitting percentage.
 
For WashU, it was Bach who led the charge up front in kills with a match-best 18, along with 13 digs and a team-high three blocks.  
 
Sells notched 11 kills and Buckley registered her third 40+ assist match of the year with a match-best 43 assists. Buckley also added 13 digs in the victory.
 
The Bears also served the ball well, finishing the match with 11 aces as Elise Gilroy posted five on the day.
 
Lane Bohrer collected eight kills and 10 digs, while Abby Li chipped in with seven kills and two blocks.
 
Taryn Gurbach tallied her sixth consecutive match of double figures in digs with 11.
 
Washington U. was solid in the opening set with just one error as they recorded a .375 hitting mark.
 
The Bears pulled ahead 14-7 and were in great shape to take the opening set and a 1-0 lead.
 
Tufts sliced the lead down to 19-16, but not before the Bears pushed the lead right back to seven at 24-17.  
 
A service error from the Jumbos gave WU a 25-19 opening set win.
 
WashU trailed right from the start in the second set but tied the score up three separate times in the first 16 points.
 
Tufts broke away from the 8-8 tie and used a 10-4 run to take an 18-12 lead. WU fought its way back into the set and after two straight service aces from Bohrer, Tufts' lead was just 21-19.
 
A kill from Sells tied up the set at 23-23 but the Jumbos would claim the final two points on a kill and an attack error to even up the match at 1-1.
 
The Bears responded in the third with a great effort as they won the first eight points right out the gate for an 8-0 advantage.
 
Tufts was able to cut the Bears' lead down to just 11-10 moments later, but WashU would refuse to give up the lead and stormed ahead with a critical 7-2 run for an 18-12 lead.
 
After trading points down the stretch, another attack error from Tufts on set point gave the Bears a 25-19 set victory for a 2-1 lead.
 
In the fourth and final set, it was another see-saw battle. The Bears got off to another great start, boasting a 6-1 lead, but Tufts would slowly work its way back into the set.
 
The Jumbos reduced the gap to 15-13 and were looking to force a fifth and final set. However, Washington U. dug deep once again and provided a stellar effort down the stretch.
 
Bohrer and Sells combined for six kills down the stretch, including a kill from Bohrer on match point to preserve the victory.
