No. 11 Women's Soccer Opens Season with 2-0 Win Over Greenville

St. Louis, Mo. – The No. 11 Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team opened the 2022 season with a 2-0 win over Greenville at Francis Olympic Field on Thursday evening.

After a scoreless first half, the Bears came out to score what would be the game-winner in the 56th minute. Senior Maggie Brett scored her first career goal on a long ball into the opposite side of the net, putting WashU up 1-0.

Less than 10 minutes later, in the 63rd minute, junior Kate Flynn took a cross, navigated around Greenville defenders and fired it in past a diving Greenville goalkeeper. It also marks Flynn's first career goal, as she is a defensive stalwart for the Bears.

WashU had several other solid scoring opportunities prior to finding the back of the net for the first time, including a shot in the 46th minute by first-year Marilee Karinshak, which hit the crossbar.

WashU registered 11 total shots with five on goal and recorded six corner kicks to Greenville's six.

The win marks the first since Jim Conlon returned to the helm of the WashU women's soccer program and the sixth-straight win over Greenville for the Bears.

WashU is back in action on Sunday afternoon with a 12 p.m. match against Trinity at home.
