Box Score 2 Pleasantville, N.Y. – The (RV) Washington University in St. Louis softball team split its doubleheader with NYU on Saturday afternoon, falling in the first game before coming back to win the second.
The Bears are now 19-8 overall with a 7-4 mark in UAA play.
Game 1: NYU 4, WashU 0
The Bears recorded their first hit of the game in the top of the fourth inning, as Tami Wong singled to left field and then stole second base. The final out was recorded, however, leaving Wong stranded.
NYU came out in the bottom of the inning to score two runs and take a 2-0 lead. Erin Scott led off with a single to left field and Kalena Paredes followed that with a homer to right field.
WashU put three runners on base in the top of the fifth inning, but could not send a run home.
Kirsten Drabek led off with a walk and advanced on an Erin Reardon bunt. Taylor Geluck drew a walk to load the bases and Gould reached on a fielder's choice to keep the bases loaded for the Bears, but the final out was recorded to end the inning.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, NYU scored its final two runs. Lily Candelaria doubled to left field and moved to third on a Sophia Leon sac bunt. Dunning then drove in Candelaria with a sac fly to centerfield to give the Violets a 3-0 lead.
Hannah Lee singled to center and Scott reached base on a fielding error. Paredes drew a walk and Kong reached on a fielding error, giving Lee time to score.
In the top of the sixth inning, Wong led off with a single through the left side followed by a single up the middle from Natalia Pilpil. Drabek reached on a fielding error by short stop to load the bases, but a double play ended the inning with two runners stranded.
In the top of the seventh, Olivia Craycraft laid down a bunt and moved into scoring position on a Katie Gould grounder. Maggie Baumstark singled through the right side to put runners on the corners, but the final out was recorded to end the inning and the game.
Wong finished 2-for-4 while Reardon, Craycraft and Pilpil finished 1-for-3.
Jamie Burgasser took the loss in the circle, pitching four-and-two-thirds innings with three hits, three runs, two walks and three strikeouts.
Game 2: WashU 5, NYU 0
The Bears bounced back quickly, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning to open the game.
Baumstark got things going with a single up the middle. With two outs, Pilpil doubled to left center to score Baumstark and then scored on a Nicole Hay triple to right center to put WashU up 2-0.
After a scoreless second inning for both teams, Baumstark drilled a homer to left field to give the Bears a 3-0 edge.
In the top of the sixth inning, WashU added its final two runs of the game.
With two outs, Drabek singled to left field and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Reardon followed with a triple to right field to score Drabek. Payton Irwin drove in Reardon with a single up the middle, giving the Bears the 5-0 lead which held until the end of the game.
Baumstark finished 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI while Pilpil and Reardon both went 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored.
Senior Madison Denton picked up the win in the circle, pitching a complete game with two hits, no runs and four strikeouts. She is now 6-2 on the season.
WashU and NYU wrap up the four-game series tomorrow with one game at 11 a.m. ET.
