St. Louis, Mo. – The No. 6 Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis team earned two victories on Saturday at Tao Tennis Center, defeating UW-Whitewater 7-2 and Grinnell 8-1.
Before the Bears' match against Grinnell, seniors Sam Komis, Daniel Li, and Luke Smith were recognized.
With the two victories on Saturday, WashU improves to 12-6 on the season, as they will next prepare for a big week ahead next week with matches against No. 13 Dennison and No. 2 Chicago.
Against UW-Whitewater, the Bears grinded out two wins at No. 2 and 3 doubles, as Jeremy Ouyang/Scott Yamamoto won 8-5 and Jared Phillips/Gaurav Singh collected an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles.
In singles play, the Bears won five of the six matches, as Jared Phillips was the first off the court in singles, posting a dominant 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles.
Holding a 3-1 lead, Abhi Ramireddy, who is ranked No. 4 in the Central Region in singles, notched a 6-4, 6-2 win at the No. 1 slot.
Singh clinched the match for the Bears at No. 4 singles with a 6-3, 7-5 win, while Daniel Li and Luke Smith also won in straight sets at No. 2 and 3 singles. Li won 6-4, 6-2 and Smith earned a 6-3, 6-3 victory.
Against Grinnell, the Bears won all three doubles courts to hold a comfortable 3-0 edge, following wins from Ramireddy/Li at No. 1 doubles, while Ouyang/Yamamoto won their second match of the day at 8-5.
Sam Komis and Lucas Guy recorded an 8-6 victory at No. 3 doubles.
In singles action, Ramireddy battled back from a set-down to win in a third set tiebreaker, 4-6, 6-4, 10-5 at No. 1 singles.
Phillips rolled to a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles and James Shaheen crusied to a 6-0 6-3 victory at the No. 4 position.
WashU also won an additional three-set match, as Komis rallied from an opening set loss, winning 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5 singles, while John Fakouri fought past his opponent at No. 6 singles with a 6-4, 7-6 (7) victory.
