St. Louis, Mo. – The Washington University in St. Louis baseball team split its Saturday doubleheader on Senior Day against Fontbonne University at Kelly Field.
The Bears dropped game one 10-8 but bounced back with a decisive 14-2 (F/7) victory in game two.
WashU will close out the regular season tomorrow at Fontbonne in a single game at Shaw Park at noon.
Before today's games, seniors Tim Van Kirk, Andrew Huang, Bo Anderson, Zac Styka, Matt Lopes, Austin Sachen, and Matt Bauer were recognized. In addition, Caleb Durbin, who is currently playing professional in the minor leagues for the Augusta GreenJackets of the Atlanta Braves' organization was also recognized as part of the 2022 senior class.
Game two- WashU 14, Fontbonne 2
WashU dominated game two right from the start. After a scoreless first inning from both sides, the Bears exploded for eight runs on six hits in the second frame.
With the bases stacked and nobody out, Broghan O'Connor smashed a grand slam over the left field fence to put the Bears in control 4-0.
WashU would also score later in the inning thanks to RBI singles from Clayton Miller and Bo Anderson, and a two-RBI single from Zac Styka.
The Bears added a run in the third off an error to take a 9-0 advantage before Fontbonne tallied its first run of the game in the top of the fourth off an RBI double to left center.
WU took advantage of the long ball yet again, as the Bears went back-to-back with solo homers from Anderson and O'Connor for an 11-1 lead.
Fontbonne would get a run back in the sixth, but the Bears would put the finishing touches on the contest in the sixth as Anderson hit his second homer of the day and then a two-RBI double from Joe Georger scored WashU's 14th run of the game.
Sebastian Guzman earned the win on the mound for the Bears, pitching 4.2 innings in relief and posting eight strikeouts.
WashU finished the game with 14 hits as Anderson led the way with an impressive 3-3 performance with three RBI and two home runs.
O'Connor finished 2-3 with five RBI, connecting on a solo homer and a grand slam. For the day, O'Connor hit three home runs and had six RBI.
Senior Tim Van Kirk also notched a multi-hit game with a 2-3 effort at the plate with two runs scored and three stolen bases.
Game one – Fontbonne 10, WashU 8
The Griffins tacked on two runs in the first inning, scoring off a throwing error and an RBI single.
WashU quickly fought back with four runs on four hits in the bottom of the second to take a 4-2 lead. The inning was highlighted by an RBI double from Harry Mauterer.
After Fontbonne loaded up the bases in the top of the fourth, the Griffins recorded four runs on three hits to go back in front, scoring on a fielder's choice, and RBI double to left center, and a two-RBI single to right.
With the Bears trailing 6-4, Bo Anderson delivered a two-RBI double to left center to tie up the game at 6-6, scoring both Andrew Huang and Brandon Buday with two outs.
WashU would reclaim the lead in the bottom of the fifth, after Broghan O'Connor ripped a solo homer to left to put WU up 7-6.
O'Connor would bring home another run of insurance in the following inning after drawing a bases loaded walk.
Holding an 8-6 lead, WashU's Matt Lopes held Fontbonne scoreless for three full innings, but Fontbonne would break through in the 8th.
Extra base hits from Fontbonne were critical as an RBI double to right center scored the first run of the inning, followed by a two-RBI double to left moments later.
WashU was unable to rally back from the 10-8 deficit as the Bears went down in order in the ninth.
The Bears finished with 10 hits in total as Buday led the Bears' bats with two hits, while the Griffins recorded 13 hits in total.
