Box Score 2 St. Louis, Mo. – The Washington University in St. Louis softball team swept Fontbonne in the regular-season finale on Saturday afternoon. The Bears notched their 30th win of the season for the first 30-win season since 2016.
Prior to the game, the Bears honored their seniors – Madison Denton, Katie Gould, Holly Stoner, Nicole Hay and Kirsten Drabek.
Game 1: WashU 5, Fontbonne 2
The Griffins got on the board first, scoring their lone two runs in the top of the first inning.
Lilly Jones led off with a single through the ride side and Allysa Ibarra singled up the middle. Grace Morris moved the runners ahead on a sac bunt and Hannah Miener drove in Jones and Ibarra with a double to left field.
The Bears turned around to tie things up in the bottom of the second inning.
With two outs, Kirsten Drabek doubled down the left field line and Katie Gould bunted to the pitcher to move Drabek to third. Gould then stole second and both runners scored on a Maggie Baumstark single up the middle.
In the bottom of the third, the Bears took their first lead of the game.
Tami Wong led off with a single to right center and Natalia Pilpil doubled down the left field line, moving Wong to third. Erin Reardon singled to left center to drive in Wong and then Payton Irwin drilled a single up the middle to bring in Pilpil and Reardon for a 5-2 lead that would ultimately hold until the end of the game.
Wong went 2-for-2 with one run scored while Reardon finished 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored. Pilpil also went 2-for-3 with one run scored while Irwin finished 1-for-3 with two RBI and Baumstark went 1-for-4 with two RBI.
Holly Stoner picked up her 10th win of the season in the circle, pitching six innings with six hits, two runs and three strikeouts.
Game 2: WashU 5, Fontbonne 2
The Bears scored their first run in the bottom of the first inning. Baumstark hit a one-out single up the middle and scored on a Wong double to right center.
WashU added three more in the bottom of the second to take a 4-0 lead over Fontbonne.
Irwin led off with a single to second base and Nicole Hay followed with a single to right field. Kirsten Drabek drew a walk to load the bases for the Bears. With one out, Baumstark singled up the middle and advanced to second on the throw, giving Irwin and Hay time to score. Wong followed up with a sac fly to center field, scoring Drabek.
Fontbonne scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning, starting with a Morris single to short. Miener followed that up with a bunt single to the pitcher, moving Sam Foppe, who was pinch running for Miener, to second.
Lexi Becker then singled to the pitcher, loading the bases. A Grace Harlin single to center drove in Foppe and prompted a pitching change for the Bears. Michaela Mason reached on a fielder's choice and Alaina Hotop, who came in to run for Miener, scored to cut WashU's lead to 4-2.
WashU pushed the score to 5-2 in the top of the sixth inning.
Gould led off with a bunt to the pitcher and Baumstark reached on a fielder's choice to the shortstop. Pilpil then drilled a double to center field, scoring Baumstark.
The Bears put the exclamation point on the game in the top of the seventh inning, ending the game with a double-play to take the 5-2 win.
Baumstark went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs while Wong finished 2-for-3 with two runs. Reardon also went 2-for-3 and Hay finished 1-for-2 with one run scored.
Madison Denton picked up the win in the circle, pitching three innings with eight hits, two runs and three strikeouts. Jamie Burgasser earned the save with four innings pitched, with one hit and four strikeouts.
The Bears now await their fate for the NCAA Tournament, which begins on May 12.
