Box Score St. Louis, Mo. – The No. 25 Washington University in St. Louis softball team fell to Case Western Reserve University 5-0 on Sunday to conclude the series. The Bears and the Spartans split the series 2-2.
WashU is now 18-6 overall with a 6-2 mark in UAA play while Case is 13-8 and 5-2 in conference.
Although the Bears were the first to put a runner on base in the bottom of the first, following a Maggie Baumstark single to left field, she was left stranded.
In the top of the second inning, the Spartans took a 2-0 lead, starting with a Liv Thomas single to shortstop. Bella Russo then doubled to left center, bringing in Thomas for the first run of the game. Russo stole third and then scored on an error to put Case up 2-0.
In the bottom of the inning, WashU had a chance to pull even with two runners on base. Natalia Pilpil drew a walk and advanced to second on a Kirsten Drabek single through the left side. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch, but the inning was ended with a strikeout and grounder.
Case added another run in the top of the fourth, as Thomas drilled a one-out homer over the center field fence to put the Spartans up 3-0.
The Spartans added another run in the top of the sixth inning, starting with an Amanda Riely single through the right side. Russo then doubled to left center to put both runners in scoring position. Grace Yeung reached on a fielder's choice, giving Riely time to score and give Case a 4-0 edge.
In the top of the seventh, Case added its final run of the game. KaiLi Gross singled up the middle and then stole second and third bases. Jordon Manworren then singled up the middle to score Gross and put the Spartans up 5-0.
The Bears tried to put together a late rally in the seventh inning.
With two outs, Olivia Craycraft singled up the middle but was left stranded as the final out was recorded, ending the game.
Craycraft went 1-for-1 while Baumstark, Ashley Kennedy and Drabek finished 1-for-3.
Holly Stoner took the loss in the circle, pithing three-and-a-third innings with four hits, three runs and one strikeout.
The Bears are on the road next weekend for a four-game series at NYU before returning home on April 12 for a doubleheader against Webster.
