Box Score Altamonte Springs, Fla. – The No. 19 Washington University in St. Louis women's tennis team defeated Brandeis 5-3 on Sunday morning to finish fifth at the UAA Championship.
The Bears started out winning two of three doubles matches to take a 2-1 edge over Brandeis.
Aasha Ardila and Maggie Yang picked up the first point with an 8-1 win over Cecilia Denis and Nikita Salkar at third doubles. Katherine Johnston and Divya Sharma followed with an 8-4 victory over Ana Hatfield and Jiayi Zhang at second doubles.
Karen Gao and Ainsley Heidbreder fell to Bhakti Parwani and Sabrina Loui 8-7 (7-5) at first doubles.
In singles action, Gao fell to Parwani 6-3, 6-0 at first singles before Katherine Johnston picked up a win over Hatfield at fourth singles, 6-3, 6-2.
Sophia Huynh lost to Loui at third singles 6-2, 6-2 while Sharma defeated Salkar 6-2, 6-3 at second singles. Anke Patel topped Zhang 7-5, 6-3 at sixth singles.
The fifth singles match between Hannah Johnston and Anastasia Sia went unfinished. Johnston fell 2-6 in the first set but won the second 6-4. The third set was tied 1-1.
The Bears now await their fate in the NCAA Tournament. Qualifying teams will be announced on May 9 while individuals will be announced on May 11.
