Bears Fall in Extras at Case in UAA Series Finale

Box Score

Cleveland, Ohio – The Washington University in St. Louis baseball team suffered an 8-7 loss in 10 innings at Case Western on Sunday afternoon in UAA play.

With the loss, the Bears drop the series, as CWRU won three of the four contests, winning each game in walk-off fashion. Additionally, Case also clinches the UAA Title after today's contest.

The Spartans took the opening lead in the home half of the first off a sacrifice fly, but the Bears quickly answered back thanks to a two-RBI triple from first-year Brandon Buday in the top of the third, pushing the Bears out in front 2-1.

WashU would add to its lead in the fourth with three runs on five hits. Jack Miller got things started with a leadoff double to right center, followed by a single from Bo Anderson and the Bears had two runners on with no outs.

Magnus Dunn's RBI double to left scored Miller and moved Anderson to third with no outs in the inning, as WashU went ahead 3-1.

Later in the frame, Braden Mazone brought home both Anderson and Dunn with a two-RBI single to left.

With the Bears in front 5-1, Case Western reduced the lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the fifth off a sacrifice fly, but the Bears would get the run back in the top of the sixth after Buday connected on his second hit of the day, scoring Mazone, who reached on a one-out single earlier in the inning.

CWRU would plate a run each in the sixth and seventh innings, but the Bears remained in front 6-4.

In the ninth, once again Case Western tied things up. The Spartans first scored a run off a leadoff solo homer to right. With two outs, the inning continued after an infield error allowed the tying run to advance to third.

With runners on the corners, another costly error by WashU scored the tying run and sent the game to extra innings.

WashU regrouped and went ahead 7-6 after Hunter Goldberg's RBI to left center scored Dunn as the Bears went back on top.

However, Case would win its third straight game over WU with a two-run homer to center to win the contest in the bottom of the tenth.

The Bears recorded at least 10 hits for the 15th time this season on Sunday, as Buday, Tim Van Kirk, Jack Miller, Anderson, Dunn, and Mazone all finished with multi-hit games with two hits each.

Clayton Miller got the start on the mound and finished with a no-decision, pitching 5.2 innings as he surrendered three earned runs and struck out three.

Kyle Coates received the loss after the pitching the final 3.2 innings of the contest. Coates struck out three and allowed five runs and five hits.

WashU will return to Kelly Field for a non-conference matchup with Webster on Wednesday at 3:00 PM.
