Box Score 2 Cleveland, Ohio – The Washington University in St. Louis baseball team dropped its doubleheader at Case Western Reserve University on Saturday afternoon.
The Bears are now 11-20 overall and 3-12 in UAA play and trail the series to CWRU 1-2.
Game 1: CWRU 8, WashU 7
WashU got on the board first in the top of the fourth inning as Andrew Huang drilled a homer to right field to go up 1-0.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, CWRU took a 2-1 lead.
Nick Talarico hit a lead-off double to center field and advanced to third on a Tre Talarico sac fly. Flynn Lenahan drove in the first run with a single through the left side, scoring Talarico. Cole Jarrett then singled to left field and Trey Haley was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Jacob Lott hit a sac fly to right field, bringing in Lenahan to take the lead.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, CWRU exploded for five runs to take a 7-1 edge over the Bears.
Nick Harms led off with a homer to right field. Lenahan tripled to right field and Jarrett drove him in with a single to right.
Haley singled through the right side and then Jacob Lott struck out swinging but reached base on a wild pitch, loading the bases. The runners then moved forward on a balk, scoring Jarrett. The final two runs of the inning scored as Jack Anderson doubled through the right side, bringing in Haley and Lott.
In the top of the eighth inning, Broghan O'Connor doubled to center field to get things going for the Bears. With two outs, Tim Van Kirk doubled to right center, bringing in O'Connor.
In the top of the ninth inning, the Bears rallied to score five runs and tie the game 7-7.
Zac Malis drew a walk and Clayton Miller singled to short, moving Malis up to third. Jack Miller was hit by a pitch to load the bases for WashU and set up a two-run double for Bo Anderson, who brought in Malis and Miller.
Following a pitching change for CWRU, Harry Mauterer singled through the right side, bringing in Miller. With two outs, Van Kirk reached base on a fielding error by right field and reached third base, giving Anderson and Mauterer time to score.
CWRU, however, hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the inning to come away with the win.
Talarico drew a walk to start things off and Armstrong was hit by a pitch. Jarrett drove in the winning run with a single to right center.
Van Kirk finished 2-for-5 with one RBI while Huang went 1-for-3 with one run and one RBI. Anderson was 1-for-3 with two RBI and one run.
Kyle Coates took the loss on the mound, pitching just one-third of an inning with the one hit and the winning run.
Game 2: CWRU 4, WashU
The Spartans jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
With one out, Zack Carinci single to center and advanced on a Nick Harms single to center. Then, with two outs, Armstrong drew a walk to load the bases and both Carinci and Harms scored on a Lenahan single to left center.
After five scoreless innings, the Bears put up a run in the top of the seventh inning.
O'Connor was hit by a pitch and moved forward to second on a Braden Mazon sac bunt. Van Kirk drove in O'Connor with a single up the middle, cutting CWRU's lead to 2-1.
WashU tied things up in the top of the ninth inning.
Magnus Dunn drew a lead-off walk and moved to second on a Joe Georger sac bunt. Mazone loaded the bases with a single through the left side before Van Kirk drove in Dunn with a sac fly to center field.
In the bottom of the ninth, Harms drilled his second homer of the day, scoring Carinci in the process and winning the game.
Van Kirk went 2-for-4 with two RBI while O'Connor was 1-for-2 with one run scored.
Will Henkel took the loss in the circle, pitching 2.2 innings with four hits, two earned runs and four strikeouts.
The Bears wrap up the series with CWRU tomorrow at 11 a.m. ET.
