Box Score 2 St. Louis, Mo. – The Washington University in St. Louis softball team split with Emory on Saturday afternoon, but won the overall series 3-1.
The Bears are now 28-10 overall with a 14-6 mark in UAA play.
Game 1: WashU 7, Emory 1
The Bears bats were hot from the start, putting up three runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Katie Gould led off with a single up the middle and Tami Wong drew a walk before advancing to second on a wild pitch. Natalia Pilpil drew another walk and both Wong and Pilpil scored on an Erin Reardon double to left center. Reardon then came home as Eimear Cunningham drilled a double to center, giving the Bears a 3-0 edge.
After a scoreless second inning, WashU added two more runs in the bottom of the third.
Pilpil hit a lead-off single through the left side and Reardon followed with a double to left center. Payton Irwin reached base on an error by right field, giving Pilpil time to score.
Nicole Hay reached base on a fielder's choice and Irwin advanced to second to put herself in scoring position. Irwin scored as Kirsten Drabek hit a single to left field, putting WashU up 5-0 over the Eagles.
Emory scored its lone run of the first game in the top of the fifth inning.
Page Nellis led off with a double to right field and moved to third on a Tyler Miller grounder to second. Kayla Lang drove in Nellis with a single through the left side, cutting WashU's lead to 5-1.
The Bears, however, added another run in the bottom half of the inning.
Irwin was hit by a pitch and then pinch ran for by Emily Talkow. Hay singled to right to move Talkow up to third and Talkow went on to score on a Drabek sacfly to center.
The Bears added their final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning, starting a double from won to lead things off. Pilpil singled through the left side and Reardon drove in Wong with a sac fly to right field.
Wong and Pilpil each went 2-for-3 with two runs scored while Reardon finished 2-for-4 with three RBI and on run. Cunningham went 2-for-4 with one RBI.
Madison Denton picked up her 10th win of the year in the circle, pitching a complete game with four hits, one run and two strikeouts.
Game 2: Emory 4, WashU 2
The Eagles came out to score two runs in the top of the first inning.
Nellis was hit by a pitch to lead off and advanced to second on an Allie Moberg grounder. Megan Weisenberg singled to second and then stole second to put two runners in scoring position. With two outs, Natalie Costero singled to right field, bringing in Nellis and Weisenberg for a 2-0 lead.
WashU cut that lead in half with a run in the bottom of the third inning.
Drabek got things going with a single up the middle and Taylor Geluck drew a walk. Both runners advanced a base on a Gould grounder and scored as Maggie Baumstark singled through the left side.
The Eagles added two more in the top of the fourth inning.
Mattie Ryan drew a lead-off walk and Costero followed with a double to right field. Lang was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Rachel Cocolis then singled through the left side and both Ryan and Costero scored on an error to take the 4-1 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Bears tried to put together a rally to force extra innings, but only crossed one run as Kayla Nommensen pitch hit and drilled a homer over the left center fence.
Nommensen was 1-for-1 with one RBI and one run scored. Drabek finished 1-for-3 with one run scored and Baumstark was 1-for-3 with one RBI.
Jamie Burgasser took the loss in the circle, pitching 5.1 innings with six hits, two earned runs and four strikeouts.
The Bears wrap up the regular season next weekend with a doubleheader on Saturday against Fontbonne, which will also serve as senior day.
