Box Score Altamonte Springs, Fla. – The No. 19 Washington University in St. Louis women's tennis team lost to No. 12 Case Western Reserve University, 5-2, in the UAA Quarterfinal match on Friday morning.
The Bears move into the consolation bracket and will play Rochester on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. ET. Rochester fell to Chicago in the quarterfinal. The winner of that match will move on to the fifth-place match on Sunday at 8:30 a.m. ET.
WashU was swept in doubles action to go down 3-0 early.
Karen Gao and Ainsley Heidbreder fell to Hannah Kassaie and Lily McCloskey 8-4 at first doubles while Katherine Johnston and Divya Sharma lost to Pallavi Goculdas and Nina Hoog 8-7 (8-2) at second doubles. Maggie Yang and Carolyn Tsung were defeated by Savannah Bright and Katherine Wang 8-6 at third doubles.
The Bears picked up their lone wins of the match at fourth and fifth singles.
Katherine Johnston defeated Anna Kan 6-4, 6-3 at fourth singles while Hannah Johnston beat Bright 6-1, 6-0 at fifth singles.
Gao fell to Kassaie 6-1, 6-2 at first singles while Tsung lost to Madeleine Eiss 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 at sixth singles.
Both second and third singles remained unfinished as the match was already clinched by Case.
Sharma beat McCloskey 6-1 in the first set at second singles before falling 6-4 in the second set. She was trailing McCloskey 4-1 in the third set. Sophia Huynh lost the first set of third singles to Radha Patel 7-6 (7-2) and was tied 6-6 in the second set at the time it was called.
