Strong Pitching, Timely Hitting Lead Bears Past Case Western in 10-0 Series Opening Win

Box Score

Cleveland, Ohio – The Washington University in St. Louis baseball team rolled to a 10-0 victory (F/7) at Case Western on Friday in University Athletic Association play.

WashU scored 10 unanswered runs combined through the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings on its way to a complete-team effort win.

Austin Sachen posted his fourth win of the year on the mound, recording eight strikeouts in five innings of work, while allowing just two hits in the outing. Sachen leads WU in wins and also currently leads the UAA in total strikeouts with 67.

Kyle Coates pitched the final two innings in relief and was solid as well, allowing just one hit to preserve the shutout victory.

Following two scoreless frames, the Bears' offensive spark began in the top of the third after Jack Miller connected on a two-RBI double to right to score both Andrew Huang and Anthony Gross for a 2-0 edge.

Clayton Miller would cross the plate moments later to push the Bears' advantage out to 3-0, scoring off an RBI fielder's choice from Bo Anderson

In the top of the fourth, WashU placed two base runners on after consecutive walks. After Gross' sac bunt, both Tim Van Kirk and Hunter Goldberg reached into scoring position with just one out.

Huang's RBI in the ensuing at-bat scored Goldberg for a 4-0 lead before Jack Miller tallied his third RBI of the contest off a sacrifice fly to bring home Van Kirk.

Holding on to a 5-0 advantage, Sachen held the Spartans hitless in the fourth, as the Bears would extend their lead in the fifth with three runs on three hits.

A throwing error allowed Harry Mauterer to score from second, vaulting the Bears' lead to 6-0. Taking advantage of the Spartans' miscue, Huang delivered his second RBI of the afternoon with a single through the right side, scoring Goldberg for the second time of the day.

In the following at-bat, Clayton Miller launched an RBI double to left, the Bears' second double of the day, which scored Gross for an 8-0 lead.

WashU would plate two more runs in the sixth after back-to-back RBI from Van Kirk and Gross.

In total, the Bears posted eight hits in the victory and surrendered only three. Jack Miller led WU with a team-high three RBI, while Huang tallied his 10th multi-hit game of the year and 8th multi-RBI game of the year with two hits and two RBI.

The Bears are back in play tomorrow at Case for a doubleheader beginning at noon EST.
