Box Score 2 St. Louis, Mo. – The Washington University in St. Louis softball team swept Emory to open the final UAA series of the season.
The Bears are now 27-9 overall with a 13-5 mark in the UAA.
Game 1: WashU 6, Emory 2
It was Emory that got on the board first in the top of the first inning. Allie Moberg started things off with a single through the right and advanced on a Mattie Ryan single to center field. Page Nellis was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Kayla Lang drew a walk to score Moberg.
The Bears answered right back in the bottom of the inning. Started with a single to short from Katie Gould. In her first at-bat of the day, first-year Maggie Baumstark blasted a homer over the left centerfield fence, giving WashU a 2-0 lead.
Tami Wong doubled down the left field line and advanced to third on a Natalia Pilpil sac fly to right field. Erin Reardon then made it a three-run game with a double to right center, scoring Wong.
After three scoreless innings, WashU added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to go up 5-0.
Pilpil got things going with a single through the left side and then Emily Talkow, who came in to run for Pilpil, advanced to second on a Reardon grounder. Payton Irwin drew a walk and then Eimear Cunningham singled through the right side, scoring Talkow. In the next at-bat, Kirsten Drabek singled down the left field line to bring in Irwin.
The Bears scored their final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning, starting with a Baumstark double to left center. She moved ahead to third on a Wong grounder and scored on a Pilpil grounder.
The Eagles attempted a late rally in the top of the seventh inning, but only scored one run.
With two outs, Moberg singled to center and advanced to third on an error. Ryan then drove her in with a single to left field.
Baumstark went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs while Reardon finished 2-for-3 with one RBI. Wong finished 2-for-4 with one run scored.
Holly Stoner picked up the win in the circle with four innings of work, allowing six hits and one earned run with four strikeouts. Jordan Rossi earned the save with three innings pitched where she allowed two hits and two strikeouts.
Game 2: WashU 8, Emory 0 (5 innings)
WashU had a big inning in the bottom of the second, scoring four runs on five hits.
Reardon got things going with a single up the middle and Cunningham singled to centerfield. Nicole Hay followed that up with a single up the middle, scoring Reardon for the first run of the game. Kirsten Drabek then singled to right field to load the bases for the Bears.
Taylor Geluck sent a single up the middle and advanced to second on the throw, driving in Cunningham and Hay to take a 3-0 edge.
Gould and Baumstark drew back-to-back walks to load the bases again and Geluck scored the fourth run of the inning on a catcher's interference play.
In the bottom of the third inning, Reardon led off with a single to short stop and then stole second. Hay drew a walk and Reardon stole third to put herself in scoring position. Hay stole second and Reardon scored on the throw, giving WashU a 5-0 lead.
The Bears added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
With two outs, Baumstark drew a walk and then stole second. Wong drilled a triple to right center, scoring Baumstark, and then went on to score on the throw.
WashU added its final run in the bottom of the fifth inning, enacting the eight-run rule and ending the game early.
Reardon led off with a single through the left side and then stole second. With two outs, Kayla Nommensen came in to pinch hit and drove in the winning run with a single to right field.
Reardon led the Bears with 3-for-3 with three runs scored while Hay went 1-for-2 with one RBI and one run scored. Geluck finished 1-for-2 with two RBI and one run.
Jamie Burgasser earned the win in the circle for the Bears, her seventh of the season, pitching a complete game with two hits and three strikeouts.
The Bears are back in action tomorrow with a doubleheader against Emory at 1 and 3 p.m.
