Altamonte Springs, Fla. – The No. 6 Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis team fell 5-3 to No. 2 Chicago on Friday afternoon in the University Athletic Association (UAA) Semifinals in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
WashU sits at 13-9 on the year and will matchup with Emory in the third-place match tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m. EST, while UChicago moves to 16-1 on the year and moves on the UAA title match tomorrow.
The Bears had battled Chicago down the wire in the two previous meetings in doubles, but dropped an 8-3 decision at No. 1 doubles and lost 8-0 at No. 3 doubles on Friday, falling behind 2-0 in the team score.
Jeremy Ouyang/Scott Yamamoto jumped ahead 5-2 and recorded an 8-5 victory at No. 2 dubs to pull WashU within a 2-1 deficit.
The Bears battled hard in singles play, as James Shaheen put forth a strong effort at No. 6 singles, posting a 6-2, 6-1 victory to even the match at 2-2.
Chicago reclaimed the lead following a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles, but Jared Phillips earned a three-set victory at No. 5 singles to tie up the match at 3-3. Phillips dropped the opening set 6-2, but won the final two sets by identical scores of 6-3.
However, the Maroons would best the Bears in the end, winning at No. 1 singles 7-6, 6-3 and at No. 4 singles in a three-set battle.
Daniel Li was leading at No. 2 singles by a score of 7-6, 4-4 but the match was officially listed as unfinished with the contest already being decided.
