Altamonte Springs, Fla. – The No. 6 Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis team earned a 5-1 victory over No. 14 Brandeis in the UAA Championship Quarterfinals on Thursday morning in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
WashU improves to 13-8 on the year and with the victory, advances on the semifinal round tomorrow against No. 2 Chicago at 12:30 PM EST. Additionally, the Bears record their seventh win this season against teams nationally-ranked in the Top 40.
The Bears used a solid start and effort in doubles play to build a 2-1 lead, following a narrow 8-6 victory at No. 1 doubles from Abhi Ramireddy/Daniel Li for a 1-0 advantage.
WU extended the lead to 2-0 after Jared Phillips/Gaurav Singh held off their opponents with an 8-5 victory.
WashU nearly pulled off a 3-0 sweep, but fell 8-5 at No. 2 doubles.
In singles, the Bears kept their momentum rolling, as Phillips cruised to a decisive 6-2, 6-1 victory at the No. 5 position to push WashU ahead in the team score 3-1.
Needing just two more wins to seal the match, Singh recorded a straight-set 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles before Li closed out the match with a 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 2 singles to send WashU to the semifinals.
