Box Score 2 St. Louis, Mo. – The Washington University in St. Louis baseball team posted a doubleheader sweep on Saturday at Kelly Field against North Park in non-conference play.
The Bears rolled to a dominant 16-1 victory (F/7) in game one and left no doubt with a decisive 17-8 win in game two of the afternoon.
With the two victories on the day, WashU improves to 9-10 on the season, as the Bears have now recorded three straight wins.
WU combined for 33 runs on 31 hits in Saturday's doubleheader sweep.
Game one- WashU 16, North Park 1
North Park scored the opening run of the contest off an RBI single in the first, but the Bears would shut the door the rest of the way, scoring 16 unanswered runs.
A huge key to the Bears' success on Saturday was its pitching, as senior Austin Sachen recorded a career-high 12 strikeouts in five innings of work. In addition, Sachen collected his third win on the bump this season, a team-best.
His 12 strikeouts are tied for the eighth-most in a single game all-time in WashU program history.
Kyle Coates pitched two innings in relief, striking out four.
WashU scored three runs in the first frame to reclaim the lead, after Harry Mauterer connected on an RBI single, Andrew Huang scored off a wild pitch, and Broghan O'Connor smacked an RBI double to center.
Following a scoreless second inning from both teams, the Bears added five runs on five hits in the third.
Back-to-back doubles from Huang and Mauterer got the inning started, extending WU's lead up to 4-1.
Moments later, O'Connor notched his second hit of the day with an RBI single to right, bringing home Mauterer.
Hunter Goldberg and Tim Van Kirk each collected RBI singles throughout the inning to score, as WashU was well in front 8-1.
In the fifth, O'Connor smashed his second homer of the season to dead center and Van Kirk's RBI single to left would score Brandon Buday, who led the Bears with three runs scored in game one.
With WashU ahead 10-1, the Bears poured it on in the sixth, scoring six runs on four hits.
The inning was highlighted by an RBI triple from Jack Miller and two-RBI singles from Van Kirk and Clayton Miller.
In total, WashU finished with 15 hits, as five Bears finished with multi-hit games (Van Kirk, Miller, Huang, Mauterer, O'Connor). Additionally, the Bears also had eight stolen bases and four doubles, a triple, and a home run.
Van Kirk went 3-4 with a team-best four RBI and three stolen bases, while O'Connor went 3-3 with a double and a solo HR for three RBI on the day.
Game two – WashU 17, North Park 8
Similar to game one, the Bears wasted little time building an early advantage.
Huang led off the second with a triple, followed by an RBI double from Mauterer to put the Bears on top 1-0.
Extending the lead out to 2-0, Hunter Goldberg ripped an RBI single to center to score Mauterer.
WashU would then score six runs in the next three frames, while Clayton Miller, who started on the mound in game two, pitched five shutout innings to secure the win.
Joseph Hettinger and Matt Lopes saw action in relief, combining for five strikeouts.
With the Bears in front 8-0, NPU scored its first runs of the game in the sixth off a three-run home run to left.
The Bears responded in the bottom half of the inning, delivering six runs on five hits. Goldberg's bases clearing three-RBI double to deep-right center put the finishing touches on the inning, as WashU surged ahead 14-3.
However, the Vikings would not go away quietly, scoring four additional runs on three hits in the seventh and one in the eighth, but the Bears would tally three runs in the eighth.
Malis' two-RBI double to center scored both Jack Miller and Mauterer, while Buday brought home Mails with an RBI single to right, extending the advantage to nine.
WashU posted 16 hits in game two, as Hunter Goldberg led the Bears with a 3-4 effort at the plate, with a double and a career-best four RBI.
Malis added two hits and a career-high four RBI, while Mauterer posted his fourth consecutive multi-hit game and finished with three hits.
Van Kirk extended his hitting streak to 11 games in the victory.
The Bears will return to action next Friday against Emory for a four-game homestand in UAA play at Kelly Field.
