Bears Drop UAA Contest at Brandeis

Box Score

Waltham, Mass. – The Washington University in St. Louis baseball team dropped the final game of its four-game UAA series at Brandeis University on Sunday afternoon, falling 10-4.

With the loss, Brandeis officially wins the series, taking three of four against WU.

Unlike the first three games of the series where WashU jumped ahead first, in Sunday's contest the Judges struck first with four runs in the home half of the first.

Brandeis scored its first two runs on a two-RBI double to left, followed by a two-run homer in the ensuing at-bat for a 4-0 lead.

Zac Styka's RBI single down the right field line scored Jack Miller to chip into the lead at 4-1. Miller scored from second base and reached after a lead-off double.

The Judges' high-powered offense went to work again in the bottom of the third with three consecutive hits, scoring on a solo home run to left, and back-to-back doubles to left and center field, extending the lead to 6-1.

WashU went down in order in both the fourth and fifth frames, but battled its way back into the game in the sixth, following an RBI double to left center from Jack Miller (his second double of the day) to score Clayton Miller

After Harry Mauterer singled to center to advance Miller to third, Styka came up big again with a two-RBI single to right center to cut the lead down to 6-4.

However, the Bears' rally would fall short, as Brandeis would plate a run of insurance off another RBI double, before pounding out three additional runs on four hits in the eighth.

In all, WashU totaled nine hits in the loss, while the Judges recorded 16. In addition, BU posted four doubles and two homers.

Sebastian Guzman collected the loss on the mound for the Bears, dropping his record to 1-3 this season. Guzman finished his outing pitching six full innings of work with seven runs allowed and four strikeouts.

Joseph Hettinger tossed the final two innings of play in relief, fanning four batters.

Jack Miller, Clayton Miller, and Stkya each registered two hit. Miller led the Bears with two doubles and Styka finished with a team-high three RBI, marking his fourth multi-RBI game of the season.

Brandeis' Sean Decker-Jacoby earned the win, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks.

WashU will return to action next Friday at Case Western Reserve for a four-game series. Friday's contest is set to begin at 3:00 p.m. EST.
