Softball Splits Final Day of Series at Carnegie Mellon

Harmony, Pa. – The (RV) Washington University in St. Louis softball team split with Carnegie Mellon on Sunday afternoon, but won the series 3-1.

The Bears are now 25-9 overall with an 11-5 mark in UAA play.

Game 1: WashU 12, CMU 2

The Bears put their first run on the board in the top of the first inning. Katie Gould led off with a triple to left field and scored on a Maggie Baumstark sac fly to center.

WashU exploded for five runs in the top of the third inning to go up 6-0 on the Tartans.

Gould led off with a walk and advanced on a Baumstark double down the left field line. Tami Wong drilled a double to right center, bringing in both Gould and Baumstark. Natalia Pilpil followed that up with a double right center, bringing in Wong.

With one out, Kirsten Drabek singled down the left field line and advanced to second. Pilpil went on to score on an error by left field. Erin Reardon then singled to center field and advanced to second, and Drabek scored on a center field error.

The Bears went on to score another five runs in the top of the fourth inning, taking an 11-0 advantage over CMU.

Pilpil reached on a fielder's choice play, Nicole Hay was hit by a pitch and Drabek drew a walk to load the bases for WashU.

Reardon ripped a single to right field, bringing in Pilpil and Hay and then Payton Irwin sent a home run shot over the left field fence, also bringing in Drabek and Reardon.

CMU scored its only two runs of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning,

Summer Faille got things going with a single through the left side and then was pinch ran for by Olivia Van Zandt. Emily Finger reached base on a fielding error and then Meghan Holquist singled up the middle. Van Zandt advanced to third on the play but was out at home. Erika Heffernen drove in Finger and Holquist with a triple to right field, cutting the Bears' lead to 11-2.

WashU scored its final run of the game to end things in five innings in the top of the fifth inning.

Wong was hit by a pitch and Emily Talkow came on to run for her. Talkow then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Hay singled up the middle, scoring Talkow for the eventual 12-2 win.

Reardon finished 2-for-2 with two RBI and one run scored. Wong went 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored while Gould finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Madison Denton picked up her ninth win of the season in the circle, pitching four innings with six hits, two runs and four strikeouts. Jordan Rossi came on to pitch one inning of relief with one hit and one strikeout.

Game 2: CMU 3, WashU 2

The Tartans got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning. With one out, A Pederson doubled to left center and Faille singled to shortstop. Finger reached on a throwing error by the pitcher, scoring Pederson.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Tartans added their final two runs. With one out, Libby Eichberger laid down a bunt to the pitcher and Emily Song singled through the right side. With two outs, Maya Goodwin tripled to left field, bringing in both Eichberger and Song.

The Bears scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning but could not added another to tie the game.

Wong led off with a single to shortstop and Pilpil drove her in with a double to right center. Talkow came in to run for Pilpil and scored on an Eimear Cunningham single to center field.

Pilpil went 1-for-3 with one RBI and Wong finished 1-for-3 with one run.

Holly Stoner took the loss in the circle, pitching five innings with seven hits and two earned runs with four strikeouts.

The Bears are home again next weekend for the with a four-game series against Emory to end UAA play.
