Box Score 2 Waltham, Mass. – The Washington University in St. Louis baseball team returned to action today and split its Saturday's doubleheader at Brandeis in University Athletic Association play.
WashU recorded a dominant 18-8 victory in game one but fell 7-6 on a walk-off two-RBI single in game two.
After Saturday's games, the Bears currently sit at 10-17 (2-9, UAA) while the Judges are 15-8 (5-6, UAA) overall.
The Bears will close out the series tomorrow with one more game at Brandeis beginning at 11:00 a.m. EST.
Game one – WashU 18, Brandeis 8
It was an impressive victory for the Bears in game one, who notched 18 runs on 17 hits en route to their largest margin of victory this season in league play.
WashU tallied three runs in the top of the first, as Andrew Huang, who boasted a career-best 4-5, 5 RBI performance at the plate, knocked in Tim Van Kirk off an RBI single up the middle.
Clayton Miller's double down the left field line pushed runners into scoring position, followed by a sac fly from Jack Miller and an RBI single to right center from Anthony Gross for a 3-0 Bears advantage.
BU quickly returned the favor with five runs on five hits in the bottom half of the first, but the Bears were resilient and fought back, scoring 14 unanswered runs through the third, fourth, and fifth innings.
In the third, Zac Styka's RBI groundout trimmed the lead to 5-4 and Gross' second hit of the day on an RBI single through the right side scored Jack Miller to tie up the game.
With the bases loaded, the Bears took advantage of three consecutive bases loaded walks, as Tim Van Kirk, Mauterer and Huang all brought in a run apiece.
Holding an 8-5 lead, WashU opened the flood gates with a seven-run fourth inning. After a bases loaded RBI walk, Mauterer delivered a two-RBI single through the left side and Huang recorded an RBI single up the middle, pushing the Bears' lead up to 12-5.
Moments later, Clayton Miller crushed a three-run homer to left to extend the lead to 15-5.
Huang's fourth hit of the day came with another sharp at-bat in the sixth, bringing in two runs off a single to right field.
The Bears' pitching staff of Austin Sachen and Kyle Coates combined for 10 strikeouts in Saturday's win and held the Judges scoreless in six separate innings.
Coates picked up the victory for the Bears, pitching five innings and striking out five while allowing just one earned run throughout the day.
Huang had a career-day, achieving a 4-5 effort offensively with a career-high five RBI to lead the way.
Clayton Miller posted a four-hit performance at the plate for the third time in his career, and finished with four RBI for the second time.
Gross also reached a season-best performance, finishing 3-6 with two RBI.
Game two – Brandeis, 7, WashU 6
In the second game of the afternoon, the Bears jumped ahead again for the third straight game of the series, scoring four runs in the first two innings of action.
Clayton Miller's two-out RBI single through the left side in the top of the first scored Van Kirk from third to make it 1-0 WashU.
The Bears continued to pour it on with a strong second inning, scoring three runs on two hits. Van Kirk collected a two- RBI double to right center, which brought in both Mauterer and Brandon Buday.
A sac fly from Gross allowed Zac Malis to cross the plate and extended the Bears' lead to 4-0.
Brandeis sliced the deficit down to 4-3 after platting three runs in the home half of the third. The Judges scored off a two-run homer to right and an RBI single through the left side.
After scoreless frames from both teams in the fourth and fifth innings, the Bears added an insurance run in the sixth following a sacrifice line out from Van Kirk in left to score Buday for the second time on the afternoon.
Will Henkel got the start on the mound, lasting 2.2 innings with two strikeouts, but Matt Lopes pitched 5.2 innings in relief, and held the Judges hitless through the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings.
Highlighting the seventh inning was Buday, who made a superb diving catch in deep left centerfield, as Lopes tabbed his fourth consecutive scoreless frame.
WashU jumped ahead 6-3 in the top of the eighth after Huang's RBI single scored Gross, marking the senior's sixth RBI of the doubleheader.
Brandeis connected on another two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to reduce the lead down to 6-5 with nobody out.
Later in the inning, the bases were loaded with two outs, but the Judges would walk it off with a two-RBI single to left center to win the game.
Van Kirk posted a team-high three hits and three RBI in the loss, while Malis and Jack Miller added two hits apiece.
Lopes received the loss on the mound and Brandeis' Christian Petrisko came away with the win.
