Softball Picks Up Two Wins At Carnegie Mellon to Open Series

Pittsburgh, Pa. – The (RV) Washington University in St. Louis softball team swept Carnegie Mellon in the first two games of the four-game series on Friday afternoon.

The Bears are now 24-8 on the year with a 10-4 mark in UAA play.

Game 1: WashU 4, CMU 2

The Bears wasted no time in putting runs on the board, scoring two in the top of the first inning.

Maggie Baumstark got things going with a double to center field and scored on a Tami Wong double to left field. Natalia Pilpil drove in Wong for the second run of the inning with a double to center.

In the top of the fifth inning, WashU put two more runs on the board to take a 4-0 lead over the Tartans.

Baumstark drew a two-out walk, stole second and then advanced to third on a throwing error. Wong then drilled a homer over the left field fence, scoring Baumstark in the process.

CMU scored its first run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Kiera Boucher singled to right center and Emily Song followed that with a single to center. With two outs, Megan Hu singled up the middle to score Boucher, cutting the Bears lead to 4-1.

In the Tartans' final at-bat in the bottom of the seventh inning, they added one final run.

With two outs, Libby Eichberge reached base on an error. Hu then doubled to right center, scoring Eichberge. CMU could not put together any more runs however, as the last out was recorded, ending the game with a Bears' win.

Wong finished 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs. Payton Irwin went 1-for-2 and Pilpil finished 2-for-4 with one RBI.

In the circle, Holly Stoner picked up her eighth win of the year, pitching a complete game with six hits, one earned run and six strikeouts.

Game 2: WashU 6, CMU 0

After four scoreless innings of play, the Bears came out in the top of the fifth inning to take a 2-0 lead.

Erin Reardon put down a lead-off bunt and advanced to second on an Irwin sac bunt. Olivia Craycraft ripped a triple to left center, scoring Reardon for the first run of the game. Katie Gould then reached base on a fielder's choice, giving Craycraft time to score for the 2-0 edge.

The Bears added another one in the top of the sixth for a 3-0 lead.

Pilpil led off with a double to left field, and then was pinch ran for by Emily Talkow. Kirsten Drabek singled up the middle, scoring Talkow.

In their last at-bat, the Bears went on to score three more runs to take a 6-0 lead which held until the end of the game.

Craycraft got things going with a lead-off bunt. With two outs, Wong singled to left field and both runners moved forward on a wild pitch. Pilpil then reached base on a fielding error by the short stop, bringing in both Craycraft and Wong.

Nicole Hay drew a walk, pushing Pilpil to second and Pilpil went on to score on a Drabek single to center field.

Craycraft went 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI while Reardon finished 2-for-3 with a run scored. Drabek went 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Jamie Burgasser picked up the win in the circle, pitching a complete game with three hits, one walk and four strikeouts. She is now 6-3 on the season.

The Bears are back against the Tartans tomorrow at 12 p.m. ET.
