Box Score 2 St. Louis, Mo. – The (RV) Washington University in St. Louis softball team swept Webster in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon. The Bears improve to 22-8 on the season.
Game 1: WashU 4, Webster 2
The Bears put up two runs in the bottom of the first. With two outs, Tami Wong drew a walk and Natalia Pilpil singled down the left field line. Nicole Hay then brought in both runners with a double to center field, giving the Bears a 2-0 edge over the Gorloks.
Webster cut the lead to a single run in the top of the fourth inning. Paige Thomas hit a two-out single to left field and Ashlee Seltzer drew a walk. Jaelin Holdaway loaded the bases with a single up the middle and a run scored as Sidney Holtz was hit by a pitch.
The Gorloks then pulled even in the top of the fifth inning. Sheyla Iniguez singled to right field and then scored on a throwing error off a Sheridan Underwood ball.
WashU, however, quickly answered, scoring two runs in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead for good.
Wong led off with a single to right field and was driven home by a Pilpil double to left center. With two outs, Kirsten Drabek drilled a homer over the center field fence, giving WashU the 4-2 lead which held until the end.
Wong went 1-for-2 with two runs scored while Drabek finished 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored. Pilpil also went 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored.
Jamie Burgasser picked up the win for the Bears, pitching 3-and-one-third innings of relief in which she allowed three hits, one run and struck out two batters. She is now 5-3 on the season.
Game 2: WashU 8, Webster 0 (5 innings)
After three innings of scoreless play, the Bears broke the deadlock with three runs in the bottom of the third inning.
Cunningham led off with a double to left center and moved forward to third on an Olivia Craycraft bunt single to the pitcher. With one out, Katie Gould doubled up the middle, bringing in Cunningham for the first run of the game.
Maggie Baumstark then hit a sac fly to center field, scoring Craycraft. Wong followed that up with a triple to center field, bringing Gould home to give the Bears a 3-0 advantage.
After forcing three quick Gorlok outs in the top of the fourth inning, the Bears struck again for another run in the bottom of the inning.
Hay led off with a single to center field and moved up on a Drabek single through the left side. Craycraft hit a sac fly to center field, bringing in Emily Talkow who was running for Hay.
The Gorloks put together a rally in the top of the fifth inning but the Bears defense held off any runs, resulting in three runners left stranded.
WashU came out to score four runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the game early.
Baumstark drew a walk to get things going and Wong followed with a single up the middle. Pilpil also drew a walk to load the bases for the Bears. Baumstark and Wong scored the first runs of the inning as Hay doubled to right center.
Drabek drew a walk, prompting the second pitching change of the inning. Cunningham then reached on a fielder's choice to short, bringing in Pilpil for a 7-0 lead.
The final run of the game scored as Craycraft drilled a single to left field, bringing in Drabek and ending the game.
Craycraft finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored while Hay went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Both Gould and Wong finished 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI while Drabek went 1-for-2 with one run scored.
Madison Denton picked up her eighth win of the season in the circle, scattering five hits and striking out three in 4-and-a-third innings of work.
The Bears jump back in UAA play this weekend with a four-game series at Carnegie Mellon starting Friday at 3 p.m. ET.
