Box Score 2 St. Louis, Mo. – The Washington University in St. Louis baseball team dropped a pair of contests to Emory University on Sunday at Kelly Field in University Athletic Association (UAA) play.
Emory won game three of the series 4-1 in the first matchup on Sunday, and then swept the series with a 9-6 victory in the series finale.
Both games were seven-inning contests due to UAA time limit with travel rules.
WashU drops to 9-15, (1-7, UAA) on the year, while Emory moves to 21-12 (8-4, UAA).
Game one – Emory 4, WashU 1
For the third consecutive game, Emory took the early lead, scoring two runs in the opening frame off RBI singles.
With a 2-0 lead, the Eagles tacked on another run off an RBI groundout in the top of the second. WashU would get a run back in the home half of the inning, after Hunter Goldberg's RBI double to right brought home Kaden Bernhard.
The Bears were held without a hit in the next four innings as both Emory and WashU starter Sebastian Guzman posted four straight shutout innings. Guzman allowed just one hits in the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings.
In the seventh, the Eagles platted a run of insurance on a two-out RBI single to left, extending the Eagles' lead out to 4-1.
WashU had a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the seventh, but were unable to bring the runner home, as WU went hitless in the final five innings of play.
In total, the Bears were limited to only two hits in the game with Goldberg and Buday reaching on base hits.
Guzman received the loss, striking out five in six innings of work with three earned runs.
Game two- Emory 9, WashU 6
WashU knocked in two runs in the bottom of the first, as Brandon Buday scored off a throwing error and Andrew Huang delivered an RBI single up the middle, scoring Anthony Gross for a 2-0 advantage.
Emory answered with two runs of its own in the top of the second to tie up the contest at 2-2.
WashU was primed to take the lead back in the third, loading up the bases with just one out, but came away empty-handed after a strikeout and fly ball ended the inning.
After a scoreless third frame, both teams combined for nine runs and six hits in the fourth.
The Eagles accounted for five runs in their half of the inning as four players recorded run-scoring plays.
WashU's big fourth inning started with back-to-back singles from Zac Malis and Bernhard.
With the bases stacked, a bases loaded walk drawn by Huang scored the first run of the inning. Moments later, both Buday and Gross would score off an error to reduce the lead down to 7-5.
WashU cut the deficit down to just one run after Harry Mauterer's RBI single to center scored Styka from second.
Mauterer reached into scoring position later in the inning, but was unable to be brought home.
The Bears' bats went cold in the final three innings, totaling just one hit as they failed to score. Kyle Sulkowksi of EU, was tabbed with the win on the mound, as he struck out five in 2.1 innings pitched.
Matt Lopes got the start on the bump for the Bears in game two, pitching 3.1 innings and striking out three in the loss.
Emory scored twice more in the sixth off an RBI single and infield error, pushing the lead out to 9-6.
The Bears totaled 10 hits in the loss, while Emory finished with 13. Huang, Zac Styka, and Kaden Bernhard all finished with two hits apiece.
Huang and Styka each tallied a team-best two RBI while Buday and Gross each scored two runs.
The Bears will next get set for their first road UAA series, matching up with Brandeis beginning on Friday.
