WashU Drops Series Opening Doubleheader to Emory

St. Louis, Mo. – The Washington University in St. Louis baseball team fell twice on Saturday to Emory University in University Athletic Association (UAA) play. 

Emory won game one 11-5 and then took game two 11-6 (F/8). Game two was called off after eight innings of play due to darkness. 

The Bears move to 9-13 on the season and drop to 1-5 in league play, while Emory sits at 19-12 overall and 6-4 in the UAA. 

 

Game one – Emory 11, WashU 5 

After a scoreless opening frame, the Eagles tacked on four runs in the top of the second, scoring on an RBI triple, an infield groundout, and a two-RBI double. 

Trailing 4-0, WashU got on the board in bottom half of the inning following a sac fly from Harry Mauterer, which scored Brandon Buday

In the top of the fourth, EU extended its lead out to 6-1 after a two-run homer to left. 

Despite a five-run deficit, the Bears battled back. In the bottom of the fifth, Andrew Huang connected on a two-RBI double to right to bring the lead down to 6-3. 

Moments later, WU scored its third run of the inning off a sac fly from Buday, scoring Magnus Dunn

After both teams added a run apiece in the sixth, the Eagles led 7-5 and would tally another insurance run in the seventh off a solo homer to right and a two-run home run over the centerfield wall. 

The Bears' bats were limited to just one hit in the final three innings of play. 

Tim Van Kirk and Huang led WashU with a multi-hit effort, going 2-3 from the plate. Huang posted a team-best two RBI and recorded his 10th double of the season. 

In addition, WashU left nine runners on the base path and finished with seven hits. 

Clayton Miller picked up the loss on the mound, pitching 5.0 innings and striking out four. Jack Moore of Emory, who leads the UAA in total wins, received the victory, lasting 5.1 innings. 

 

Game two- Emory 11, WashU 6 (F/8) 

The Eagles got off to another quick start in game two of the doubleheader, scoring two runs in the first off a two-RBI double to deep-right center. 

Emory added one run apiece in the second and third innings off an RBI single and a passed ball. 

Down 4-0, the Bears clawed their way back into the contest with a huge fourth inning, as they scored five runs on five hits.

The comeback started with an RBI single from Zac Styka to center, which brought home Jack Miller, who reached on a single. 

Two-out hitting was crucial for the Bears, who scored all five runs in the frame with two outs. Joe Georger continued the rally with a two-RBI double down the right field line to reduce the lead down to 4-3. 

Georger would later cross the plate following an RBI single from Anthony Gross, tying the game at 4-4. 

Van Kirk extended his hitting streak to 15 games and reached on an RBI infield single, scoring Gross for a 5-4 Bears advantage. 

However, WashU was unable to hold onto the lead as Emory notched three runs in the sixth, all on RBI singles. 

Emory would tally two additional runs on four hits and an error in the seventh, as they began to pull away. 

WashU had two runners on with one out in the bottom half of the seventh, but were limited to only one run, as Huang's RBI groundout scored Van Kirk for the Bears' final run. 

The Bears' pitching staff combined for 13 strikeouts in game two, but also finished the game with 12 walked batters. 

Emory would again add more runs of insurance in the eighth, extending its lead with two more runs off two hits and two costly errors. 

Styka led WashU with a 3-4 effort at the plate, while Van Kirk and Jack Miller each tallied two hits apiece, as the Bears posted 11 hits in total as a team. 

WashU will conclude the four-game series with a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 10 AM.
