No. 21 Women's Tennis Wins Two, Moves on to Midwest Invitational Final

Madison, Wis. – The No. 21 Washington University in St. Louis women's tennis team picked up two wins on Friday at the Midwest Invitational.

In the first match of the day, the Bears defeated No. 15 Kenyon, 6-3, and closed out the day with a 8-1 win over Grinnell.

The Bears move on to face No. 1 Chicago tomorrow at 11 a.m.

Match 1: #21 WashU 6, #15 Kenyon 3

The Bears picked up two wins at doubles to take an early 2-1 lead over Kenyon.

Katherine Johnston and Divya Sharma defeated Erika Pontillo and Catriana Macintosh 8-5 at second doubles. Maggie Yang and Aasha Ardila picked up a point at third doubles due to a forfeit.

No. 5 Karen Gao and Ainsley Heidbreder lost to the No. 4 team of Daria Beshentseva and Eleni Dakos 8-5 at first doubles.

The Bears won four at singles to clinch the match.

Katherine Johnston defeated Macintosh 6-3, 6-3 at third singles while Hannah Johnston beat Pontillo 6-4, 6-3 at fourth singles. Carolyn Tsung topped Irina Beshentseva 6-1, 6-4 at fifth singles and Kenyon forfeited at sixth singles, giving Ardila the win.

Sharma fell to No. 9 Daria Beshentseva 6-1, 6-0 at first singles while Sophia Huynh lost to Dakos 6-2, 6-2 at second singles.

Match #2: #21 WashU 8, Grinnell 1

The Bears swept doubles to take a 3-0 lead over Grinnell to start the match.

Gao and Heidbreder defeated Tan and Ioanna Giannakou 8-6 at first doubles while Sharma and Katherine Johnston beat Mira Machanda and Sophia de los Reyes 8-2 at second doubles. Yang and Ardila beat Lily Perrin and Erin Jarvis at third doubles, 8-7 (7-5).

WashU then won all-but-one singles match to win its second match of the invitational.

Huynh defeated Manchanda 6-3, 6-4 at second singles while Katherine Johnston beat Giannakou 6-2, 6-0 at third singles. Hannah Johnston topped de los Reyes 6-1, 6-0 at fourth doubles and Tsung beat Utsah Kalra 6-0, 6-0 at fifth singles. Ardila rounded out the singles with a win over Perrin 6-2, 0-6, 10-7.

Sharma fell to Sabrina Tang 6-1, 6-0 at first singles.
