Softball Drops Two at Millikin

Decatur, Ill. – The Washington University in St. Louis softball team lost two at Millikin on Sunday afternoon. The Bears are now 4-2 on the season ahead of hosting the Schutt Invite next weekend on their new home field.

Game 1: Millikin 8, WashU 3

The Big Blue put five runs on the board in the bottom of the first inning to go up 5-0 on the Bears.

With two outs, Leah Foreman drew a walk and advanced to second on a Kaylee Goluch single to short. Sarah Lahner, who was pinch running for Foreman and Goluch advanced a base on a wild pitch and both scored on an error to put Millikin up 2-0.

Grace Biondo singled to center to advance Gretchen Gould to second and Cassie Reed hit a three-run homer to center to put the Big Blue ahead 5-0.

The Bears cut the Big Blue lead to three, scoring two runs in the top of the second inning.

With one out, Kirsten Drabek singled to third base. Ashley Kennedy then singled to right and advanced to third on an error, allowing Drabek time to score the first run of the game for WashU. Kayla Nommensen then singled to second and Kennedy scored to make the score 5-2.

Millikin came out in the bottom of the second to put up two more runs and take a 7-2 lead over the Bears.

Rylee Blake led off and was hit by a pitch, then stole second to put herself in scoring position. Foreman drilled a homer to center, bringing in Blake for the 7-2 lead. The Bears got out of the inning with no more runs scoring, leaving two Big Blue runners stranded.

After a scoreless fourth and fifth inning for both teams, WashU added another run in the top of the sixth inning.

Payton Irwin drew a lead-off walk. Erin Reardon, who came in to pinch run for Irwin, advanced to second on a Nicole Hay ground out. With two outs, Kennedy sent a double to center, bringing in Reardon and cutting the Big Blue's advance to 7-3.

Millkin put the final run of the game on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Blake drew a walk to lead off and then stole second. Kendallyn Davison laid down a sacrifice bunt and Blake scored.

Kennedy finished 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored. Tami Wong also finished 2-for-3 and Nommensen went 1-for-2 with one RBI.

Holly Stoner picked up the loss in the circle, pitching 1.2 innings, allowing five hits, seven runs and striking out one. Jordan Rossi came on to pitch 4.1 innings of relief and striking out six.

Game 2: Millikin 9, WashU 4

The Bears scored first, going up 1-0 in the top of the first inning.

With two outs, Maggie Baumstark drilled a double to left center field and Kennedy followed up with a walk. Natalia Pilpil drew a walk on the next at-bat, loading the bases for WashU. Irwin also drew a walk, scoring Baumstark. The Bears left three stranded to end the inning.

Millikin came right back to go up 4-1 in the bottom of the first inning.

Blake hit a lead-off single to left field. Davison then laid down a sacrifice bunt and reached on an error, allowing Blake to score. Foreman was hit by a pitch to reach base and then, with two outs, Gould singled right field and advanced to second on an error, scoring Davison. A single to right center from Reed then brought in Gould and Foreman, giving the Big Blue a 4-1 edge.

Millikin put up another run in the bottom of the second has Davison hit a one-out triple to right field and scored on a Foreman sacrifice fly.

The Bears answered with a run in the top of the third inning.

Baumstark led off with a single through the left side and advanced to second on a Kennedy single. Pilpil drew a walk and Emily Talkow, who was running for Kennedy, and Baumstark advanced a base. With two outs, Hay singled through the left side to score Baumstark and cut Millikin's lead to 5-2.

The Bears returned in the top of the fourth inning to add another run to the board.

Reardon drew a walk to lead off and then stole second to put herself in scoring position. She advanced a base on a Wong ground out and then scored on a wild pitch to cut the Big Blue's lead to 5-3.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Millikin scored another to take a 6-3 edge.

With one out, Gould doubled to center and Reed reached on a throwing error, moving Jada Wilson, who was pinch running for Gould, to third. Wilson went on to score as Goluch reached on a fielder's choice.

WashU scored its final run in the top of the sixth inning.

With two outs, Katie Gould singled to second. Wong then sent a double to left and advanced on the throw, allowing Gould to score and cut Millikin's lead to 6-4.

The Big Blue put up their final runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Lanie Chizmark led off with a walk and stole second. Blake then reached on an error and Chizmark advanced to third. Blake also stole second to put two runners in scoring position. Chizmark scored on a wild pitch to give Millikin a 7-4 lead and then Blake scored on a Foreman single to go up 8-4. Julia Lopanec came in to pinch run for Foreman and stole second base.

Biondo sent a single to center and advanced to second on the throw, moving Lopanec to third but was then thrown at home. Biondo scored the final run of the game following a Gould single to right field.

Baumstark finished 2-for-2 with two runs scored.

Madison Denton took the loss in the circle, pitching four innings and allowing five hits, five runs and striking out two. Jamie Burgasser pitched 1.2 innings and allowed five hits and four runs.

The Bears take on Wartburg and Westminster on Saturday, March 12 in their home opener on their brand new field.
