Softball Completes Series Sweep of Brandeis With 5-3 Win

St. Louis, Mo. – The Washington University in St. Louis softball team completed the sweep of Brandeis in the UAA opening series, winning Sunday's game 5-3. The Bears are now 16-4 overall with a 4-0 mark in conference play.

After three scoreless innings, Brandeis put the first run on the board in the top of the fourth inning as Amidori Anderson drilled a homer over the centerfield fence, putting the Judges up 1-0.

WashU came out in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-1 lead.

Tami Wong led off with a walk and Ashley Kennedy singled up the middle, moving Wong to third. Wong tied things up 1-1 as she scored on a passed ball. Then, Natalia Pilpil hit a double to left center, scoring Emily Talkow, who came in to run for Kennedy.

Pilpil moved up to third on a Payton Irwin sac fly and scored as Nicole Hay singled through the right side.

Following a Judges' pitching change, Kirsten Drabek drew a walk and both runners moved up a base as Olivia Craycraft grounded out to first. Katie Gould sent a double to left center, scoring Hay to give the Bears the three-run edge.

In the top of the fifth inning, Brandeis cut the Bears' lead to just one run, scoring two.

Jamie Pippin led off with a walk, prompting a pitching change for the Bears as Holly Stoner came in for Jordan Rossi.

Lily Medici laid down a bunt and beat out the throw to move Pippin into scoring position. Both runners advanced a base on an Anna Kolb sacrifice bunt and Pippin scored as Marley Felder singled to right field. Melissa Rothenberg drove in Medicii with a sac fly to left, cutting into the Bears' lead, 4-3.

WashU scored the final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning.

With two outs, Craycraft drew a walk and then stole second. Gould followed with another walk and Maggie Baumstark drove in Craycraft with a single through the right side.

Defensively, the Bears forced three quick Brandeis outs in the top of the seventh to complete the series sweep.

Kennedy finished 2-for-3 on the day while Gould went 1-for-1 with one RBI and two walks. Drabek finished 1-for-2 with a walk and Hay went 1-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored.

Rossi notched her second win of the season in the circle, allowing two hits and two runs while striking out six in four innings of work. Stoner came on to pitch three innings of relief with two hits, a run and two strikeouts.

The Bears are home again next weekend with a UAA series against Case Western Reserve University, beginning with one game on Friday at 3 p.m.
