Box Score 2 St. Louis, Mo. – The Washington University in St. Louis baseball team closed out its opening UAA weekend against (RV) NYU at Kelly Field, splitting its Sunday doubleheader with the Violets.
NYU took the first game to claim the series, winning 8-6, but the Bears bounced back with a 9-4 victory in the series finale.
WashU's victory over NYU gives the Violets its first loss of the season, who entered Sunday as the only unbeaten team remaining in DIII.
WU sits at 7-10 (1-3, UAA) after the weekend while NYU is 12-1 (3-1, UAA)
The Bears are back at home on Saturday for a non-conference doubleheader against North Park at Kelly Field.
Game one – NYU 8, WashU 6
Four Bears collected multi-hit games as Bo Anderson led WU with three hits, two of which were doubles, and two RBI.
Jack Miller, Magnus Dunn, and Harry Mauterer each finished with two hits apiece as the Bears tabbed 13 hits, with five doubles and four stolen bases.
The Bears opened the game in the bottom half of the first with a run off an RBI single from Tim Van Kirk, who extended his hitting streak to eight games.
NYU quickly tied the contest back up in the top of the second off an RBI single to left.
The Violets added three runs in the third frame, which included runs scored off an RBI triple, sac fly, and RBI single to take a 4-1 advantage.
WashU fought back with two runs in the home half of the third, thanks to RBI doubles from Andrew Huang and Bo Anderson. Huang's bat has been a huge lift to the Bears' offense as he has recorded eight doubles since March 19.
Trailing 4-3, NYU would match the Bears in the top of the fourth with two more runs to push its lead back to three runs at 6-3.
In the bottom of the fifth, Jack Miller delivered a two-RBI double to right center, scoring both Anderson and Harry Mauterer to make it a 6-5 game.
However, the Violets plated a run of insurance in both the seventh and ninth innings to take an 8-5 lead.
Down to their final three outs, the Bears tried to rally in the ninth, as Anderson came up with a clutch RBI single to right to score Zac Malis and cut the lead to 8-6.
With runners on first and second, WashU had the winning run at the plate, but came away empty-handed.
Matt Bauer was tabbed with the loss, striking out three in 2.1 innings pitched. Joseph Hettinger tossed four innings in relief and finished with four K's, while Will Henkel pitched the final 2.2 innings.
Game two – WashU 9, NYU 4
Four the fourth time of the series, the Bears jumped ahead with a run in the first inning, following a sacrifice fly from Tim Van Kirk.
NYU would plate one run each in the second and third frames off RBI singles to claim a 2-1 lead.
The Violets extended their lead out to 4-1 after scoring two additional runs in the fourth, off an RBI single and a wild pitch.
Senior Matt Lopes entered the contest in relief and earned the victory on the mound for the Bears, as he had a great outing, throwing a career-best six shutout innings, while allowing only two hits and striking out three.
After Anderson crossed the plate in the bottom of the fourth on a wild pitch, the deficit was trimmed to two runs at 4-2.
However, the momentum would shift back to the Bears in the fifth, as WU knocked in five runs on five hits.
Huang smashed a two-RBI double to left center to bring home Dunn and Hunter Goldberg to tie up the contest at 4-4.
With two outs, the Bears would score three more runs as an RBI single from Mauterer scored Huang from second for a 5-4 lead. Anderson would also score on the play off a throwing error.
Moments later, Zac Malis brought home Mauterer with an RBI triple to dead center, pushing the Bears' lead out to 7-4.
Defensively, the Bears were clicking on all cylinders, as Hunter Goldberg had a big day behind the plate, throwing out three baserunners in the victory.
WU plated two runs of insurance in the seventh and eighth innings, as Anderson scored his third run of the day off a successful double steal, and Van Kirk smacked an RBI single to right.
In total, WashU scored eight unanswered runs in the final five innings of play.
As a team, the Bears collected 12 hits, combining for 25 for the day.
Van Kirk and Huang both produced two RBI apiece, as Van Kirk now holds a nine-game hitting streak.
Dunn and Mauterer both registered three hits apiece to lead the Bears' bats. In addition, Mauterer posted seven RBI in the four-game series.
